I am a freshman in a competitive public high school with high expectations and many opportunities. I have an above 4.0 (weighted GPA) and A's in all my unweighted classes. I also have an A in my honors English. First semester I got B's (they counted as 4's) in my Enriched Math and Science Course (honors geometry and enriched chemistry). I took challenging classes along with Mandarin Chinese 1, Band, and extracurricular activities. 1 final this semester brought my enriched chemistry grade down to a C. (A 3.0) My unweighted GPA is still above a 4. I plan on taking several AP courses/continuing with Mandarin in the future. Will one "C" during my freshman year ruin opportunities when it comes to college applications and resumes? This is the first C I've ever recieved, even if it is weighted and counts as a 3. However, I plan on building up on my 4.0 and taking it higher. Will colleges take note of this upward trend/progess and disregard my "C" slipup fresman year? I really hope this doesn't ruin my chances, I was quite distraught over this.

No. This won’t destroy your chances. Spend some time thinking about the reasons why you got this grade, and then take steps to make sure that you do better next year.

No, 1 C doesn’t ruin it.

Yes, colleges will look at an upward trend- they look for trends in grades too, not just the individual grades themselves, and upwards trends are good.
