I need help/advice.I am current college student who has been in college for 4 years and only a sophomore because of having surgery and death in the family so I had to take time off. I don't want to be in college for another 3 years. I don't mind 6 years because it's normal but not 7. I want to move on with my life. I thought I used to know what I wanted to major in, but then I woke up one day and I had no clue what I wanted to major in anymore. I want to major in Sports Administration/management or something in sports because I knew I would be able to get a college degree majoring in that and its something I love. Then I did my research and so did My Dad. I found it that majoring in sports management could potentially a waste of time and money because it limits you on what you can do with it when you graduate, plus in sports its all about who you know, not about having a sports management degree. So my dad suggested getting a business degree because he said its a very wide open field, you can get almost any job you want with that degree and it will go farther than a sports management degree. I could still get a job in sports with a business degree. So I did my research on it and then when I looked into the curriculum it was kind of difficult for me. I have a learning disability so it makes harder for me to understand the more complicated stuff, I also have a harder time grasping on to certain things. That is why I choose to major in sports because I knew I could handle those courses. I know my dad wants whats best for me and I do to, but I don't know what to major in anymore. plus all my connections I already have established are in basketball. I want to work in college athletics dept when i graduate. but I just want a good solid degree to fall back on if need be. Should I just keep majoring in sports just to get a degree because I already have started it or should I switch to business or another degree that someone knows about that would be good for me?

If your mind doesn’t click with a business degree, than it seems you’ve already answered your question. You may not have an easy path to a career, but a lot of young people don’t.

I would get a job in a gym and start in the sports field and see what happens. You may not get the job of your dreams working with a baseball team, but the fitness industry is a vital one, and you could probably get a job doing something sports related.

Gyms, schools (gym teacher), sports retail as well as sports management are all possibilities. You are more hirable in a field in which you excel.

And you can also apply for business opportunities with this degree. Business jobs do not always select just for business students.

Good luck.

What about a double major of sports management (your passion) and some other possible “back up plan” type of degree?

As far as how long it takes, what does that really matter? Those 6 or 7 years will pass whether you go to college and pursue your passion or whether you don’t. When the 6 or 7 years inevitably passes, where do you want to be? Still spinning your wheels?

I say this because when I was 29, I was mulling over going to nursing school, which I had always wanted to do but for various reasons didn’t. I said to my mom “but if I do this I won’t actually be a nurse till I’m 34!” She said, “how old are you going to be in 4 years if you don’t go to nursing school?”
