Please help :)

Hi everyone!

Like many students out there, I am a keen individual who has big dreams to attend an elite college. My top choices include Stanford, Columbia, Cornell, UPenn and Harvard. But, as usual, it is a tough process.

I am currently a junior in high school and as much as i know that this is a much despised thread in the CC community, could you please give me some feedback on what you think my chances are at these universities? your time and efforts are much appreciated :)

THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH AND I LOOK FORWARD TO ANY REPLIES! :)

bump please! :)

I think you have an above average chance at these schools, since your ECs sound really interesting. Make sure to write great essays! That said, an “above average” chance is still as small chance, considering admission rates to many of these schools are < or ~10%. Also, I hope you don’t need financial aid, since that lowers your chances at Stanford (quite significantly, I hear), Cornell (actually, I don’t think they are full-need for internationals), and Columbia (Harvard is need-blind for everyone, and UPenn is for North Americans).

All of those schools are reaches for almost anyone, unless you are well connected, legacy, or an athlete being recruited. I agree that you have some very interesting ECs. It really depends on when you apply and what the school is looking for that year. Your essays should really help to define who you are and may be a key component in their decision.

@PsychoDad10: what do you mean by “very interesting” ECs? do you mean that in a positive or a negative sense haha thanks for your thoughts though!

@OrchidBloom: Thanks! Once again, what do you mean by “very interesting”? just curious. also, I will not be applying for financial aid :)

Definitely positive ECs!

Why do you have 3 years of honors PreCalc?

@PsychoDad10: Thanks! I’ll try to keep them up

@staratzenith1997: in canada, our mathematics curriculum goes like this:
mathematics 8
mathematics 9
pre calc 10
pre calc 11
pre calc 12
calculus 12
ap calculus

Interesting as in not run-of-the-mill resume padders  Definitely good.

And yeah, we have a different math system here in Canada. We learn a bit of each subject area of math (trig, algebra etc.) every year.

Thanks! Do you guys have any suggestions as to what I can do to be even more competitive? I’m so anxious! :S

I think it looks like you’ve done everything to be presented in the best light. Consider looking at the essay prompts for the Common App and the schools you plan to apply to. I would consider starting working in essays now, as the prompts tend to remain the same- can’t guarantee that they won’t change, but beginning your essays will help you from procrastinating.

@PsychoDad10 : Thanks! I actually believe the CommonApp essay prompts change this year so I still gotta wait :stuck_out_tongue: I’m so nervous!

Does anyone else have any tips or feedback?

Shyc- the essay prompts are out already
