please help :)

i am a junior in high school and i am starting to look at a lot of schools in chicago, because that's the area i'm set on attending. (i live near pittsburgh)

i've done some research on the depaul, such as cost, acceptance rate, majors, ect. but i have a list of about 8 chicago schools i'm looking at and i need to narrow it down to about 3.

so if anyone is willing to tell me a little bit about the university it would be greatly appreciated :) such as what the location is like and if it's near downtown, what the atmosphere is like, if students/teachers are generally friendly, ect.

thanks!!
~katie

Katie, the location differs according to major. The Computer Science and Business majors are housed in the Loop, while the liberal arts majors (including Music and Theatre) are in Lincoln Park. Both areas offer lots of amenities, but my D, a cello performance major, lives in and loves Lincoln Park. It is a nice residential/commerical area northwest of downtown and readily accessible to the L. The Theatre Department is top-notch and the Music School is very good as well, both require separate admission through portfolio or audition. DePaul offers fairly generous merit awards for good students with C. 1290 (old scores) SAT or above. DePaul is definitely worth a visit

I'm a current student at DePaul... Ask away! What the poster said above is correct. Just ask specific questions and I'll be glad to help.

is depaul a good school for communications/journalism?

yea thats what i was wondering...

and are the dorms nice??

OK, here is the deal, "The Department provides both an introduction to the broad field of communication and allows students to specialize in one of five tracks: Communication and Culture (COC), Journalism (JOU), Public Communication (PC), Radio, Television and Film (RTF), and Relational, Group, and Organizational Communication (RGO). The department also offers a variety of minors in all the tracks except Public Communication. The Department offers internships through which majors and minors can gain experience in both the public and private sector, commercial and not-for-profit organizations. Department faculty members also sponsor the university's radio station (WRDP) and supervise the student newspaper, The DePaulia. We encourage students interested in journalism and radio to participate in these organizations."

I would say that communications is a very popular major in DePaul, but I can't attest to the strenght of the program because I have no experience dealing with the department. Like any other department in DePaul, you will have tons of opportunities for internships in Chicago... not to mention the huge alumni network living in the city. DePaul doesn't get much respect out of state, but within Chicago, DePaul is very well regarded.

As far as the dorms go... some are so-so, some are extremely nice, and well others are simply unparralleled... I mean see for yourself:
http://www.loft-right.com/

Loft-Right will open next year... It's stunning.

And if you'd like to live in the Loop, there's always:

http://housing.depaul.edu/UCC/tours.asp.

those look awesome!! are they mostly for upperclassmen? and where are they located? I couldn't really tell where they were in relation to the lincoln park campus

Those were for upperclassmen, the dorms that I saw were nice, but nothing to write home about.

How's the DePaul accounting program?

Loft right is a block away from the Lincoln Park campus, UCC is in the Loop which is 20 minutes by subway from Lincoln Park.

The College of Commerce is, I believe, the largest school in DePaul. The accounting program is great. I have a cousin who graduated with a BS in accouting and she now works for GE.

Oh, and in response to the dorm question... UCC and LoftRight is for both grads and undergrads (upperclassmen and lower). The top two floors are reserved for grad students.

So its a good accounting program. Do graduates of the program get offered good jobs out of college because of the location and connections in Chicago?

How good is the politics department at DePaul, specifically their international relations/studies major?

In response to the job placement question:

Definitely.

In response to the politics department question, I can say yes, it is good. I'm a politics minor and I've been very satisfied. I do know, however, that some conservatives on campus feel as though the department as a whole is too liberal.

But it's very difficult to qualify a particular department as "good." What exactly are you looking for?

I'm specifically looking at their international relations/studies (not sure what they call it) major. As far as classes I am looking for discussion and debate, rather than just a lecture. Also what kind of interships are offered to students?

Well nearly all classes at DePaul are conducted in a seminar style... Class sizes are extremely small... most of my poli-sci classes are only 20-25 large (no such thing as large lecture halls in DePaul!), so discussion and debate are basically a given. As far as internships go, you can be placed into an internship through the career center... Chicago is your backyard so there are obviously many, many opportunities. Also, DePaul requires everyone to complete a Junior Experiential Learning Domain and a Senior Capstone, both of which can be satisfied with internship (credit varies). Hope that helps. DePaul also offers an International Studies major, you should look into that.

Thanks, I'm going to attend the Honors reception this sunday, so hopefully I will get some of my more specific questions answered then.

"Also, DePaul requires everyone to complete a Junior Experiential Learning Domain and a Senior Capstone, both of which can be satisfied with internship (credit varies)."

So for this you can go work somewhere like an accounting firm or something, get paid, and still get college credit?

dcb07 - yes.
