Please Help!!!

Hey peeps!

I am a pre-med undergrad senior and I need some opinions on my issue. I am currently studying for the MCAT and gonna apply for medical school in 2019 after I am done retaking everything I need and strengthening my MCAT. This is my case:

Current GPA is 3.4

C+ in OCHEM 1 (lecture only)
C in OCHEM 2
C in PHY 2
C in BIO 1 (lecture only)
C+ in BIO 2 (lecture only)

The rest of the classes are A’s and B’s.

I am retaking all these to get a better grade in them and a better overall science GPA.

What are your opinions on my case?

You will have a tough time in applying med school. Grade replacement is abolished for DO school in 2016 and you have a very low Sgpa score.

Concentrate on DO schools and try your best in Mcat to reach at least 80%.

To improve your odds, You could also attend an SMP program and get a high score in it.

Thanks for the feedback! Im feeling really good about the mcat so that is kind of guaranteed.

“Feeling good” is not guarantee of good results when it comes to the MCAT.

Even if you do score well, a good MCAT does not make up for a poor GPA. As it stands now, you’re going to get auto-screened out at every med school you apply to-- MD or DO.

Retaking classes isn’t going to help you. You need to enroll in a SMP or do DIY post-bac that includes 30- 36 credits of upper level sciences in bio and chem. Apply only after you ace all those challenging upper levels.

Are the above your only science courses? What is your major? I am just wondering all those Cs can be replaced by high level science courses in your current standing. Two Cs in Org and two Cs in bio will certainly screen you out of all schools, but if you have a replacement high level course, you may still have a chance in lower level DO schools. But if your major is not science, then doing well in SMP with a good Mcat is a must. Post-bac may not help you, you need be confirmed in med school level classes to get in.

Here is a list of SMP from all schools, some DO school will let you in if you can do 3.0 in that program, but do not look it down, it won’t be easy to attain 3.0. Do not worry about MD schools, they will not work for you. I recommend Touro University, about 40% of the SMP graduates with 3.0gpa got into Touro.

Better yet, there is a list of SMP in AACOM, search for it, that is all you need, you are too late for career changers.

BTW, admissions to SMP programs are competitive, you need good MCAT to get in, especially with your low sGPA.

For example, Touro only take in about 15 SMP candidates each campus.

I am a pre-med major. My major is called “medical studies”

So you guys think I have no chance in getting into an MD school even if I do get a 3.8 overall GPA and a 3.5 science GPA ?

I also have a lot of volunteer, clinical experience, and published research.

Impossible to say without a MCAT score.

Google AAMC FACTS applicants and matriculants. See table 23. (Can’t link from my phone)

But what’s your Gpa now?

I agree with the comment that “redos” are just not accepted many places.

Perhaps you need to look at less traditional medical schools:
https://www.statnews.com/2017/02/17/caribbean-medical-schools/

I was shocked to find out one of my favorite doctors graduated from a Caribbean medical school (and no, she was not from the area).

My current gpa is around a 3.49

Please don't go abroad. Consider other healthcare professions if you can't get into DO.

If your GPA after 75% of your classes is a 3.5, even with a 4.0 the final year your cumulative GPA would be 3.6, not 3.8.

The problem is your sgpa not your cgpa. What is your sgpa now. I don’t think your sgpa will attain 3.5 with orgo and bio grade that low. Med school will think twice to admit you with your lower level course almost failing.

What?

Your BCPM GPA is the issue and I don’t see how you can raise that to what you’re expecting. Retaking classes will not erase those poor grades.

The Mcat is important for admittance to SMP program given the BCMP Gpa.

what about extending another year?

What was your SAT and/or ACT score? I would say you should expect to score at a lower percentile than you did in high school. E.g. my SAT score was 99.9th percentile, my MCAT was 97th, and my Step 1 was 87th.
