Hello, I am a sophomore at a 4 year university. I have two concerns so advice to both concerns will be appreciated!!
- The deadline to resign from a class was yesterday.
I clicked the "drop" button and thought the drop process worked, but when I checked later just to make sure, it did not process for some reason, and it was past the deadline. I regret not leaving screenshots for it.
I am planning to call the office of registrar on Monday since today is Saturday. but I don't know if they will actually let me resign from it after the due date regardless of my reason.
I really need to drop this course or otherwise I will get an F.
- If they do not let me resign, I am actually thinking about dropping out of college; I'm not overreacting or dropping out just because of the failure to resign but I am actually having a hard time in my life. There is just too many hardships happening right now, and I can't take it anymore. However my uni doesn't have hardship withdrawals; withdrawal is only allowed to students who go through serious personal or family medical issues, death of family member, or military services. My hardships are related to financial and family issues but they don't belong to any of those categories. Plus, it is too late to submit a leave of absence. But don't worry, because I have plans after dropping out.
Please give me some advice, I would REALLY appreciate it.
Thank you!
i would not let one course support your decision to drop out. however, you may have good reasons to do that are not related to grades but that’s your choice.
go to your counseling office. if you have depression you can get documentation for that from a therapist or doctor. that documentation may be used in a late withdrawal appeal for the course.
deep breaths! if and when you retake the course the grade may not be calculated in your GPA (depending on your schools policies).
Deep breaths. Please DO NOT drop out of college entirely for this! It’s not a hardship to accidentally not drop a course.
There’s usually a drop fee and there will probably be a “W” on your transcript but neither is a particularly big deal. Just make sure that both the registrar and the prof who is teaching the class know about this issue, so you don’t end up with a poor grade. If you know where it is, physically go to the registrar’s office first thing in the morning. They can usually get things done quickly if you’re right there. If, after talking to the registrar, they will not let you withdraw because it didn’t process, then it would be wise to go to the counseling center for some sort of letter that would let you withdraw.
Don’t drop out of college entirely until you find out what the repercussions of doing so are both academically and financially. Timing can be everything re: how much, if anything, you will personally owe if you leave school at X point in the term, so make sure you ask the right questions and that you have a full sense of what any decision will do for you, before you make that decision.
Similarly, if you learn that you can’t withdraw from that one class now, an option may be to fail it. If you fail it, your current financial aid will cover this term, and you should be able to retake the class later once you get your life back in order. It may be that the new grade will substitute for the F in your GPA, once you retake it. Find out what the policies are on that.
