please help

im really worried about my chances next year. my UM gpa will end up being right around 3.5 and my ACT is a 34. the reason my gpa is so low is because first semester soph year i got a D in honors math 3 B's and 1 A. so my gpa was 2.8. all my other semesters the UM gpa was above 3.5 ( 3.5, 3.688, 4-3.8). all my other things like ec's and recs should be good. and my brother goes their. and ive taken almost all honors classes

please, michigan is my dream school, its the only school i would ever want to go to, im the "michigan kid" at my school, beause i always wear michigan clothes. do i have any chance?

ps: is health included in the gpa? if so that 2.8 goes up slightly

You seem to be a good applicant, that D just doesn't seem to fit at all. 3.5 isn't really that bad considering that a lot of my friends had about the same ACT score as you and lower GPA and still got in (one guy: 32 ACT, 3.1 GPA Instate) but obviously different applicants have different credentials.
I don't know what to say, you obviously have a very good chance, but that D doesnt help things. I would say don't fret too much, you have a good enough ACT to get in, but that 3.5 is just there. Write good essays and focus on what your trying to say and you should get in. Good luck
And no, health doesnt count.

hey pistons08
i have been really worried b/c my gpa is 3.1 as well
and i got a 32 on the ACT just like your friend
you say he got in though?

Look, as pistons said, there is no universal formula to admissions. Take myself, for example; I had a 29 ACT, and 3.97 GPA OOS, and I was admitted. But I know someone who had a 30 ACT and 4.0 GPA OOS who has already been waitlisted. Doesn't add up for a "numbers" school, right? You never know. I'd say getting into Mich with a 3.1 is pretty rare, esp. considering that 53% had a 3.9+ GPA, and 28% had a 4.0 GPA. But, as pistons pointed out, it does happen (note in-state status though). Essays are HUGE for virtually everyone unless you are a "turbo admit" (eg. 34, 4.0). My essays saved me lol.

sublimo: I definitely know how you feel, Michigan was my dream school. Really focus on those essays. Have your brother read them, your English teachers read them, and your parents read them. What I started out with was totally different than what I ended with. But much better. Good luck, I hope to see you in Ann Arbor in a few years. Go Blue.
