My best friend just found out she's an illegal immigrant. I'm heart-broken because I don't know how to help her. She's so devastated, and I couldn't imagine being in her position - realizing you don't actually belong in the US. But now, I ask you, oh wise CC, what can I do to help her? What should I tell her? She can still go to college in the US, right? Oh, and she definitely has an EFC of 0 zero which is definitely not helping her at all.

She's a fairly strong candidate. She has a GPA of 3.8/4.0 weighted. And I think her SAT scores are kind of weak - maybe 1200? But her ACT is a 32. So far she's taken 3 or 4? APs, all 5s, and I think she's taking 5 APs this year. She's a stellar English student, and has exclusive internships with distinguished authors to prove it. And I think she's logged more hours of community service than our grade combined. Uh, she's been on the same teams as I have - so varsity cross country and winter track. I think she's at least in the 90th percentile since I'm in the 90th and we have similar grades. Shes been doing everything right, basically.

In terms of legalities, her family pays taxes (if that changes anything), we live in NY, and she's lived here for about 14 years, I think. She definitely has no criminal record or else she probably would have found out she's illegal a while ago...

Please, please, help her out! I really don't know what to do with her, and she's so scared to talk to our college adviser about this new predicament. Please. :(
