Please Help!!! :)

Hi guys,

So I have been reading through many posts on this forum and I really have gained a wealth of knowledge. I was wondering if anyone could help me out with my delimma.

I am gonna cut to the chase: In high school I was not one of the best students and did only what was required of me. I passed my classes and graduated with a decent GPA. (3.5) However, once coming to university, I have been motivated to become a better student and make something of myself. I am currently a freshman and trying hard to maintain a decent GPA in order to transfer to a better university such as Cornell. Iam gonna answer some of the questions you guys may have for me here and I really hope you guys can advise me.

My current gpa is 3.7 (B in bio)

I have, what I consider to be, above average extra curriculars; I worked for the Obama Campaign over the summer and was one of the youngest people to get hired. (17 years old.)

Next semester (fall of '09) I will be taking classes at Gerogetown University. I got into this program (Fund for American Studies) that allows me to take classes at the Uni. while interning for a Congressman or Senator, all the while earning school credit from Georgetown University. I will be studying at Georgetown for all of fall semester.

Iam also involved in various other campus organizations.

I know that I can get great teacher recs. (some of them wrote on my behalf for this program…)

My high school gpa was 3.5…not great I know…

My ACT was average…27-30

So my question is…does someone like me even have a shot at Cornell? Also, I was thinking about taking classes at Oxford University in London over the summer…( I got into a program there that allows me to take law classes there…) however, do you think that I should pass this opportunity and instead take summer school at my home institution and bring up my GPA? Would that grant me a better chance at Cornell then going to Oxford?

Another reason why Iam asking for advise is because up until January of this year, I was set on doing pre-med. My parents didnot even want to hear anything else. However, I have decided to persue what interests me (law and politics) and transfer out to a university that can offer me a more condusive environment. If you guys have suggestions as to another school I should look into, please let me know.

Thanks guys! :)

P.S I will be transfering as Junior. So, I am hoping that my high school stats don’t hold much relevance…

you post this 40 minutes be4 regular decisions are released? lol

ok pomegranate, sorry but that was really unhelpful dont be a jerk. Obviously he would apply as a transfer and the date to apply is different. I don’t know the date off of the top of my head, but assuming you didnt miss the application date I don’t see why you shouldnt give it a shot. If you are at a pretty good school right now with a 3.7 then you may have a shot. Just know that any ivy’s transfer acceptance rate is going to be really low so apply to others as well if what you want is a transfer. If you are happy where you are now and the only reason you want to transfer is to get into an ivy then don’t bother.

agreed with BG… if youre at a good school that you dig and you only want to get into an ivy cause it’s an ivy, don’t waste the application fee.

BGapplicant, thanks for the reply. :)

I actually would like to get out of my current institution because I have yet to meet anyone that is not doing pre-med. My current school is known for its science programs, not academics or opportunities concerning law or politics. Therefore, I think it would benefit me to apply to a university where I can be around people that are passionate about law. I know that I can find those people at my current school if I really really looked for them, but I just don’t want to be friends with people with similar interests, but also with people and teachers that would encourage me.

Having said that, Iam currently a freshman. So, would I not be applying in the up coming semester–fall of '09?

I am also happy to hear that 3.7 isn’t too terrible of a GPA for Cornell. Do you have advise or opinion about extra curriculars? Do you think they stand out? Once again, thanks for your response.
