I am currently a freshmen student at the University of Maryland. The first semester is about to finish and I am having second thoughts about the school and area. I have always loved the city and wanted to go to American because I love the city and they have more majors in the field I want to study which is law, government, and international affairs(something in that area). My GPA looks like it will be a 3.6 and I know it will go only up because Ive finally realized I need to work harder and have begun to do so. My plan is to transfer out at the end of sophmore year so I was wondering what do I need to do to be accepted into schools like GW, American, NYU, Colgate, and etc (you know you need connections to get into a top law school and I need to get into a name school)

I’m not sure where you heard that you need connections to get into a top law school… You need a top GPA and LSATs to get into a top law school.

And UMD isn’t some random school, it’s a very good school. Truthfully in terms of “name vale” I’d say UMD is probably better than American.

As Knights09 pointed out, for Law School, it’s all about the GPA and LSATs. So going to a “lower” school might not always be a bad case.

But anyways, if you’re serious about going to a new school, just try and get your GPA up as high as you can, do some sort of activities, and discover why you truly want to leave (so that you can write a good essay).

It’s kind of a downer, but I think you were right about needing connections to top law schools. Even low first tier (if that makes sense) expect more than a GPA and scores. They want you to have life experience. High GPA and LSAT don’t make up the whole picture.

Thanks, I know the whole GPA and LSAT factor matters and is the most important aspect of getting into a good law school but other factors do come in. But what would I need to do to be accepted by a school such as GW, Georgetown or NYU. I think the area of UMD and atomsphere of the school is what’s hurting me. I just do not like the vibe and well honestly the reason I went at first was MONEY. But thankfully in this economy, somehow both my parents got promotions and raises. So they decided if I perform well my first two years that they are willing to send me to a school in the city and that I wanted to go before. I know I just wrote an essay but what would I need to get into GW, NYU, or Georgetown(grades, EC, programs I should attend and etc) Thanks guys once again you’re helping a lot.
