Please judge my chances

Hi all,

I am an International student, currently studying 12th Grade in the United Arab Emirates in a school which follows Indian curriculum CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education).

I just wanted to know what my chances are in getting admission into Penn State for Aeronautical Engineering/Aerospace Engineering.

I dont have GPA grading in my school. The grading is purely based on marks obtained:
9th - 85%
10th - 90%
11th - 80%

If my school had GPA grading it MIGHT be as follows :-
9th - 3.7+ (coz i got A's in all subjects)
10th - 3.7+ (coz i got A's in all subjects)
11th - 3.2 - 3.4 (coz i got a few A's and a few B's)

I am easily within the top 10 - 15% of my class

I had also recieved a half-fee scholarship in grade 11.

ACTIVITIES :
I have been selected to attend the Global Young Leaders’ Conference (GYLC) in Washington/New York this year.
Swimming
Singing
Made Robot for science exhibition
Created a presentation on the periodic table
Helped the team in coming 3rd in an inter-school robot competition
Part of the school Anti-Smoking Committee
I have been learning Indian Carnatic Music vocal for over 10 years and have give a 2 and half hour concert. I have also been learning Carnatic Music violin for over 3 years.

SAT SCORES:
MATH - 700
CR - 600
WR - 600
Planning to give it again to improve my score.

Going to give SAT II's in November. Will get above 750 in maths, physics and chemistry.

Teacher Recommendations will be really good. Not sure what the school counsellor will write (but got info from previous school mates in US universities that we usually get really good recs).

Am going to start working on the essays when the apps are released and HOPEFULLY they should be good.

Also is Penn State really good for Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering

Will appreciate all responses. good as well as bad.

Thanks all.

You're definately in.

Apply to Shreyers Honors College or other more competitive colleges like University of Michigan. I had the same grades as well (in school + SAT) but got rejected by Michigan...you might get in coz you're an international student.

Like the above poster said: You're in. About A/A Eng. yes PSU is very solid in the engineering dept. I was at a PSU Eng camp and they said something like 1 in 15 of U.S. engineers hold PSU degrees. Don't know how true that is, but it's a pretty staggering number. You are going to need to raise your SAT score for Schreyers. They basically won't look at your app if you don't have a 1350.

Look into other schools, but know that you won't walk away dissatisfied with a Penn State Engineering degree.

what exactly is an honours program????

Honors program is for the special kids who are better than the rest. You have smaller classes and accelerated courses. Shreyers Honors College is very very good.

And yeah, the Engineering program, along with the Business program, is very solid. PSU is known for Engineering and Business schools.

Thanks for the advice..........i had never thought that i would have a chance of doing honors in any school given my gpa stats.

can we do both the business and the engineering program as a dual degree in the undergraduate level.

I also wanted to know that if we applied for the honors program and did not get accepted by PSU then can we get accepted for the normal engineering program or should we again fill in an application form

will i get admission into University Park or not

You apply for admission to the Eng school through the reg PSU application. Go before Nov 30 for the best chance. You should hear by Jan 1. The honors college (SHC) application is a supplement (with separate essays and recommendations). You'll receive your SHC admission decision by mid Feb. You can be accepted to PSU and not to the honors college. Given your current SAT scores and GPA, the honors college is a big stretch but you look fine for regular admission to UP.

Will my chances depriciate really badly or will it remain the same if my GPA was around 2.8+ in my grade 12.

I am not trying for honors program now coz i doubt i will get it in Penn State UP.

they don't look at senior year GPA. Apply early (before Nov 30) and you should be fine. Activities don't really count for reg admission - just GPA through junior year and your sat scores. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply toneranger.

I wanted to know that if i apply to penn state by say nov. mid and i get rejected then can i apply again by december a second time in December with my SAT II scores as well or am i rejected and can only apply for spring or fall 2008

But if i do get accepted is it like ED in which i have to go to Penn state or can i still try for other universities.

Please give your opinions

you can apply only once for fall 2007. You don't have to go to PSU if you are accepted (it's rolling decision not early decision).
