"Please list any other colleges and universities to which you are applying."

A number of supplements ask this question on the common app. It doesn't have the yellow dot next to it, meaning it's not mandatory. However, should I write where I am applying? If I don't write it, will it in any way negatively affect my application?

Allegedly, admissions officers use it to gauge how likely you are to attend their school. I don’t think not writing it in would negatively affect your application, and I’m pretty sure there are actually rules indicating that they can’t require that you tell them where else you plan to apply.

Colleges may ask you where else you are applying, though it goes against the best practices of our professional association. They may not, however, ask you where they rank in your order of preference. If you see that, tell your counselor.

As for answering the question, do what you feel comfortable doing: leave it blank, fill it out, be vague. It’s your call. Don’t try to second guess the reader, because you really can’t.

You’re definitely right, but I guess I’m trying to figure out what the purpose is of putting it? I don’t really understand why that question is on there in the first place.

I mean even if supposedly it’s used to determine how likely you are to go to that school, what if you really wanted to go to a safety school, you know?

I applied ED to one small liberal arts college and told them I will apply to another lac in their state (they are rivals) although that’s not 100%
i think my intentions r pretty clear :Đ

do tell more! I am applying early decision and am extremely curious on how my answer to this question will be viewed. Should I just list my safety school as to further demonstrate my interest? Or perhaps list one of their competitors that I’m also applying to? How many colleges is too many to list for this question?-specifically if one is applying early decision to said institution.
