Hi--I am a rising high school senior who made an account on this website because I thought it would be helpful and reassuring about a difficult time in every senior's life: trying to get into a decent college. However, the more posts I read around here with people who are getting near-perfect SAT/ACT scores, whose schedules have AP classes running out their ears, whose AP test scores are always 4s and 5s...the more worried I become.

My GPA at the end of junior year was a 4.0, and I recieved an 1881 the first time I took the SAT. Please do not reiterate how poor this score is; I am well aware it could be better. I have not yet done the ACT, but will be later this fall. At my school no APs are really offered until you're a junior-I took two, and haven't found out my scores yet but do not predict a 5 on either. As well, I have managed to keep a GPA above 3.0 for the three years of high school I have completed. I am not of a minority ethnicity and don't have a schedule loaded down with extracurriculars. I have, however, won several academic awards and recieved consistent praise for my writing ability.

With these seemingly very poor statistics, do I have a chance of getting admitted to a decent college? Places I'm looking at include Hollins University, Furman University, and Agnes Scott. Posts on College Confidential are making me feel like a complete and total fool. Is there any place AT ALL that would take me?

Anyway, thanks to those who reply and I am sorry if my little spiel was obnoxious. I'm just really, really, REALLY worried about things.

Note that a great majority of these posters are shooting for Ivies…

What I want to know is am I an idiot and will any college AT ALL EXCEPT ME?!

God this reminds me of the Urban Dictionary definition of CC. XD

Have a look: [Urban Dictionary: college confidential](Urban Dictionary: College Confidential)

Are you an idiot? No.
Will colleges accept you? Yes.

Dude youre not an idiot. General Patton was second last in his class at West Point.

of course. Like Ilyana said, a vast majority of people on this site are shooting for HYPSM and other great places. Your scores and stuff seem good enough for the places you’re aiming for. Unless you’re also going for HYPSM, you really shouldn’t sweat what most others on this site have accomplished.

They will definitely accept you. A 1881 is a great score (and it’s very unique too, as I’m sure you’re the only one in the country who’s able to get that score). You’ll have lots of wonderful choices.

You are NOT an idiot! Don’t let the stress of the admissions process weigh you down, you’re just doing yourself a disservice. If you find a couple safeties, a few matches, and one or two reaches, I think you will surprise yourself.

My English teacher once told this to me and it helped me a lot: “Getting into college is easy. The hard part is actually going through college.” Don’t worry about finding a school; you WILL find one–probably more! Keep up your grades, do as well as you can on exams, and it will work out for you. This year won’t even be the final word on college acceptance, as you may decide to transfer to a different college later. So don’t worry! You will be fine.

This is the collegeboard page for Agnes Scott

Your scores put you very well on track, as do your grades.

You have CC’s permission to chill the eff out :-)

Most colleges probably would be happy to have you. You have to make decisions, though.

Size and location of school
What you want to study/how hard you want to work on academics
What you might like to do in your spare time
What you might want to do after college
What kind of financial aid you can get, if that’s an issue

These are just starter questions. Once you’re looking at actual colleges, you’ll come up with more. (You aren’t an idiot, remember!)

The most “competitive” schools are playing a game with each other. Unfortunately, a lot of bright, nice people get caught in it. True story: many years ago I got into two Ivies through the front door (regular methods and hoopla). Then I got to my choice and learned about side doors, back doors, trap doors, and skylights. Children of alumni and of faculty/staff members get special consideration. Working adults, including faculty and staff members, can get the same B.A. I got but get it more cheaply through the evening school (which spends gazillions of dollars to advertise for and RECRUIT students). There are programs for guest students who go to other colleges but want to spend a semester or summer at this school. And, of course, there’s a transfer option.

So just relax. Take hard courses and do well. Get to know a few teachers who can write you great recommendations. Identify something you’re passionate about, perhaps writing, and enter contests or join a workshop group. You’ll be fine.

Thank you. I’ve calmed down a good bit and am now busy thinking about future majors, a much more pleasant line of thought than “I’M A DUMBA** WHO WILL NEVER EVER BE EXCEPTED TO EVEN A COMMUNITY COLLEGE WAHHHHH!!!” Ah-hem. Anyways…

You sound exactly like me! (except I am a minority with lots of ECs, lol) But don’t sweat it kid! You have ALOT going for you. And idk where any of those colleges are but you can go to collegeboard.com and see their admission rates. If it’s about 30% you’re in :D

… How exactly does one get an 1881 on the SAT? But seriously, stop worrying.

Can you clarify whether your GPA is a 4.0 or somewhere in the range of above a 3.0? Also, I’d like to point out that the correct term is “accepted,” not “excepted.”
