GPA UW 3.12 WEIGHTED: 3.7
ACT: 23 (I know thats pretty low but I do know a couple people in my school who got in with this same score)
Mostly all honors/ A couple AP classes

-I applied for straight summer which I know is less competitive
-I'm in state
-My sister currently goes there
- and Someone who gives money on the alumni association mentioned my name to the admissions office (not sure how much that will help), but hopefully these are all assets!

I am thinking your stats will not get you into Main. My daughter goes there now and I spoke with the director of admissions during orientation. They are raising the bar for acceptance year after year.

Well, you don’t know until you know, but it’s going to be tough. I have heard that some schools, possibly the school of education, is easier to get into than others, including DUS. Also, if the alum is a big donor or has the potential to be one, I think that would be a real plus for you. Otherwise, if the alum is just a typical small donor, it probably won’t have much impact, if any. But like I said, you never know - Good luck!

While your GPA is on the money, your ACT score is not good enough for PSU main. Getting denied of admission from Penn State is not the be-all and end-all of your adult life. Opportunities come and go. I am pretty sure that other institutions that are as good as Penn State would be enthralled to take you in. Plus, what are your intended majors?

I applied undecided. Also, while I would normally completely agree with you about my ACT score. There are numerous people I know who got in summer session with a 23, who’s GPA’s weren’t too strong. Plus online it says scores only count as 1/3 of the decisions so thats why I’m thinking I may have a chance. But I guess I won’t know until I find out!

Sorry, if I sounded too crude, I was being objective about your case. I think you will be fine for the summer session, but I highly suggest that you have a plan B, just in case.

Have you considered going to other schools?

Thank you! And no, not crude at all! You were just being honest! Yes I definitely have a plan B. I got into Indiana Bloomington- School of public health, which I do intend to major in. (I just applied undecided to PSU since majors there are competitive). I would be very happy going to Indiana, Penn state is just my first choice!

Understand that if you don’t get into this school, there’s a reason. Classes here have proven to be extremely challenging for me and I’m not sure how people who barely got in are managing to pass classes.

For reference, I am a freshman and was accepted with a 4.12W GPA and a 29 ACT.

Right, I totally understand that. A lot of people who I know of that have barely gotten in said that it’s not that hard, so I guess that’s subjective and different for everyone based on many factors. For me, the reason my GPA and test score aren’t too high is because last year I had a lot of personal issues and things going on at home that really affected me, which my guidance counselor notified PSU about. Of course, everyone has their own story so I know I’m not special in any way but other than that I’m an academically strong student so wouldn’t be too worried about the workload.

I recall my entire high school accounting class was the first test in accounting 101…or whatever the entry level course number is that all business majors need to take.

@carlyk321 I think the difference in difficulty lies within the different majors, STEM majors tend to have harder and larger weed out classes. My DD is in a STEM major and her freshman roommate was a Communications major. My DD said there was a huge difference in the amount homework and studying she had to do compared to her roommate. A little advice…try to find a roommate in a similar major. It’s tough to study when your roommate is always wanting to go out and can’t understand why you have to do so much work :)

^^^ agreed. My daughter is an engineering major. So is her roommate. They found each other on The Facebook Class of 2018 page. She said her classes are intense. She also said if she had any other major she would be getting a 4.0 with her eyes closed.
