I am a rising senior this year and want to apply early to the majors colleges I am interested in! so here are my stats

-NC resident
-50% arabic 50% english ( i have a "rare" last name)
-3.43 unweighted GPA ( Ouch! bad sophomore year, made all but 2 A's my freshman and junior year
-28 ACT (took SAT and did way worse on it, but plan to take both again this fall)
-varsity and captain of Track and Cross country at my high school
-part time job since sophomore year
-part of a club that gets young kids interested in distance running (running is a big part of my life!)
-Created and manage a small business
-National Honor Society
-Selected to be an intern for the county I go to school at that maintains and repairs the networks and computers of my high school. Was selected because of my great scores in my technology classes! ( I believe this is my best EC!)
-Foreign Exchange student for half a month in europe
-Parents have some college but never received traditional 4 year degrees (does this make a difference?)

INTENDED SCHOOLS
-UNC ( my first choice but not the hardest to get into on my list)
-Wake Forest
-Villanova
-Boston College
-Boston University
-Syracuse
-Vanderbilt (my reach)
-NC State (safety i think?)
-I am also interested in some OOS publics, but I have been told since my stats are average and if I couldnt get into UNC i probably wouldnt get any aid even if i got accepted into schools like Clemson, U of Florida, Florida State, and Georgia Tech. Is that true? because I prefer them to some of the schools on my list!
-I am also in the process of applying for ROTC scholarships so if I do get one I will probably look more at the OOS public schools I listed!

Thanks for taking the time to read all this and give me your input. If you provide a link I will gladly check back!

UNC ( my first choice but not the hardest to get into on my list)
-Wake Forest-depends on your interview and essay since they don’t require ACT scores (match/low reach)
-Villanova-don’t know
-Boston College-don’t know
-Boston University-don’t know
-Syracuse-don’t know
-Vanderbilt (my reach)-low reach but you have a shot
-NC State (safety i think?)-safety

Also, with a 28 and your GPA you wouldn’t get full scholarship at SEC schools (That generally comes at a 30) but you would get a decent amount (half or more) so don’t let people entirely discourage you (and full tuition at these schools is about half or less of full tuition at the privates). Plus these schools are generally easier to apply to (less work) so there’s really no harm in it if you like them.

Also, GA Tech is a private school with higher admissions requirements and you would likely only get need-based aid there.

Boosting that ACT to a 30 will definitely help offset the GPA

UNC ( my first choice but not the hardest to get into on my list) - Reach
Wake Forest - Reach
Villanova - Match
Boston College - Match/Low Reach
Boston University - In
Syracuse - Match/In probably with some sort of aid
Vanderbilt (my reach) - Definite reach but worth applying. Good chance
NC State - Safety
I think if you like some of these schools better you should apply to them instead of ones you feel so-so about. Because wherever you end up you’re going to be there for 4 years you might as well! Plus you’ll never know if you don’t apply. You also don’t know what kind of aid you’ll get until you apply!

Clemson - Low Reach
U of Florida - Reach
Florida State - Reach (only b/c OOS)
Georgia Tech - Match/Low Reach

UNC - Reach, you have a chance though
Wake Forest - Depends on your essay
Villanova - Match
Boston College
Boston University - Low match
Syracuse - Low match
Vanderbilt - Reach, but you have a shot
NC State - Safety

UNC ( my first choice but not the hardest to get into on my list)- Instate: Match Out of State: Low Reach
-Wake Forest: High Match
-Villanova: Low Match
-Boston College: Match
-Boston University: Match
-Syracuse: Not too familiar with their stats, but I’d say high safety/low match
-Vanderbilt (my reach): Reach
-NC State (safety i think?): Yeah, safety, esp in state, but I’m biased as a UNC fan

Just as a distinction between NC State and UNC, not only are they about 50 ranking points between each other, UNC’s campus is so much nicer. I don’t think you really want to go to NC State, but just in case, I felt obligated to try and talk you out of it :D

You have URM, I think, and I think you might qualify for first generation, both of which are good. I know people (I’m presuming you’re in state?) that got into UNC with far lower test scores and far lower GPAs, so even if you don’t get in the first time around, I think you’re a definite to get in off waitlist at the very least. You have some pretty good EC’s I think you can keep the foreign exchange program off of your app unless you’re going to write your essay about it, or the kid was some crazy nationality…like Georgian or a Malaysian kid and you really got to understand their culture…or something like that, if it’s anything less than that then I don’t think it’s that you need to stress it (although it won’t hurt you I guess…I’m rambling).

haha no i really dont want to go to NC state. It is my safety and UNC is my first choice at of any school. I live in South Eastern NC so i am in state. My dad just wants me to apply to a school he is pretty sure i will get into so I chose NC state for that over ECU or something, haha. Im a UNC fan as well! But thanks for your your information! Any one else want to give me some info?

your ec’s are sick which i think gives a nice boost. I would say vandy is a reach and same with unc but you have a better shot for unc. If you can do better on the act next time and get that superscored to a 30 or something like that your odds will go up enormously.

UNC : low reach
-Wake Forest: match
-Villanova: in
-Boston College: match
-Boston University: in
-Syracuse: in
-Vanderbilt: reach
-NC State: safety.
chance me!!!

-UNC - slight reach but i think you can get in! if its truly your favorite applying early will increase your odds
-Wake Forest - accepted
-Villanova - accepted
-Boston College - accepted / very slight reach
-Boston University - accepted / safety
-Syracuse - accepted / safety
-Vanderbilt - unsure
-NC State - safety

UNC : low reach
Wake Forest: match
Villanova: match
Boston College: match
Boston University: high match
Syracuse: match
Vanderbilt: low reach
NC State: safety

-UNC ( my first choice but not the hardest to get into on my list) - In
-Wake Forest-very low reach, boost ur EC’s, write a killer essay, and retake the ACT
-Villanova-Match
-Boston College-A reach, boost ur EC’s join some clubs to offset ur low GPA
-Boston University- Match
-Syracuse- Match
-Vanderbilt (my reach)- a reach, if you retook ur act and bumped up ur scores you could get in, whats ur weighted GPA? Write a KILLER essay
-NC State (safety i think?)-safety school
