Wow, that was fast. I efiled on 2/4 and hope to get our refund and use irs retrieval tool by 2/13. I will report back.
filed on 1/23 late night
return in bank account on 1/30
Did DRT data transfer on 2/4/
filed 1/28
refund 2/6
haven’t tried to link FAFSA data yet but will early this week
efiled 1/30, refund 2/6, DRT worked 2/7… however, unable to forward to additional schools over ten until FAFSA allows me to correct again…
eFile date: 1/29
DRT available: 2/7
ok, update: efiled 2/4, irs data linked to FAFSA on 2/9/15
efile 2/3 data linked on 2/8
efiled 2/3 just did the DRT for both myself and D. This is so much smoother and faster than it was with S’12.
Does having an unpaid balance due on the federal tax return in any way impact the ability to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool? I have received conflicting information about this, and would appreciate hearing from anyone with personal experience.
Yes it does, scroll down about 2/3 of the way:

Thanks annoyingdad. I think I saw that some time ago, but I had trouble finding it again. All of the other information I found regarding the DRT wasn’t as detailed and didn’t mention that an outstanding balance would basically make the DRT unusable. It’s like they assume that everyone who files will be getting a refund. I don’t mind paying my taxes, but I prefer not to give the money to the IRS until it’s due.
Don’t know who they is that is assuming refunds, but the return isn’t fully processed by the IRS until payment is processed, so no linking for fafsa until the return is fully processed. Using the DRT is only required if the fafsa was selected for verification, but filing fafsa is optional in a strict sense.
Yes, when I checked the “where is my refund” link on irs site, it said the return was processed, refund approved and scheduled to be deposited on 2/12. I checked the link on 2/9 and was able to use DRT on same day and today our refund was indeed deposited.
“They” are those who extol the virtues of the DRT, while neglecting to mention that it won’t work for those who have successfully filed and have a balance due. And actually, I recently learned that most returns, even those with refunds, aren’t “fully processed” until the IRS compares W-2 information with the filed return, which can be months after a refund is issued. That’s a big reason why so many fraudulent refunds are issued.
While the DRT may be optional, at least some schools strongly encourage its use.
If I need to pay, and I have to mail my payment, I’ll just enter the data myself on the FAFSA. I’ll efile, submit electronically…and send the payment in the mail. It’s the best I can do.
I would love to think we will get a refund…but that is a pipe dream!
I was waiting to link FAFSA until may D2’s tax return was processed (late W2 delayed filing). Much to my surprise as soon as the the IRS Where’s my Refund showed “refund approved” (refund not yet received) the IRS data link was functional on FAFSA.
Timeline : Filed tax return electronically 2/11
Where’s my refund showed refund approved status (no refund yet) 2/15
Electronic link FAFSA/IRS worked 2/15
Note: she was getting refund.
I’d love to see some “time to data retrieval” info for those who are mailing payments. I will be filing and mailing my check tomorrow, so I’ll let you know when DRT becomes available. Last year, it was pretty quick after I sent the payment, IIRC. In the meantime, I might file FAFSA without using DRT and see if I get picked for verification (I did last year).
DD efiled 2/9, got fed. refund 2/13
we efiled 2/10
DRT 2/13
Son’s 1040 EZ: efile 2/6/15, direct deposit rec’d 2/13/15
(Didn’t try the retrieval tool that day because he didn’t notice the deposit right away.)
