The IRS told me something different in person.

Please post two things:

Days after filing until the Data Retrieval Tool could be used and . . .

Do you recommend efiling for others?

Thanks!!!!

Six days for us, but still pending for Happykid because I paid her self-employment taxes by check. The check has cleared according to our bank statement, so I don’t know what is holding things up. Now more than two weeks and counting.

If you expect a refund, exiling will expedite everything. If you owe money, be ready to make the epayment. That is where I went wrong with the kid’s taxes.

Isn’t autocorrect amazing? “exiling” should read “e-filing”.

9 days for us. I checked every day (multiple times) so I know in our case it wasn’t available any earlier than that.

If FA is a real possibility/necessity for your family I’d certainly recommend e-filing to expedite the process. Other posters have indicated that making your payment (if you owe) may be necessary in order for the DRT to work, and if that’s the case then e-payment may be a good choice as well. Our refund didn’t hit our account until a few days after the DRT was available to us, so I’m not sure whether the IRS needs to actually “process” your return before DRT will work or if it’s simply a waiting game for an arbitrary time period after your return is “accepted”. Good Luck to you!!

I read about payments holding-up processing.

I discovered I can do an electronic payment with no fee at:

I e-filed on Feb 15 and was able to use the retreval tool on Feb 26th. However, I wasn’t looking every day. I did receive a minor refund, so it was not waiting to process a payment. I did however get caught with some forms that were not available for filing until Feb 14/15th.

IRS accepted my return on Jan 30. on I was able to do IRS data retrieval on FAFSA website after Feb 4.

I e-filed my taxes on 2/1 and am still unable to use the data retrieval tool. However, it was my first time filing and I have heard that it takes longer to process. I also had to pay taxes, but they were taken out of my bank account four days after I filed.

I e-filed for both myself and my daughter on 2/16. Both of us owed payments, which I sent via regular mail on 2/19.

This morning I checked and I was able to use the data retrieval tool.

E-filed on 2/20/13
Able to use IRS DRT on 2/23/13

Efiled Feb 15. Used data retrieval Feb 26. Refund deposited today! Hope that helps!

I will be following this thread, waiting for a K-1 form to finish taxes on Tax Act…
Last year we were verified after filing paper tax returns, it was a real headache.
The tax transcript was not available from the IRS until the end of June.
Then I had to fill out a 6 page form and attach copies of W-2s and mail to the college.
Of course the college already had copies of our W-2s…

E-filed on Feb 3rd, but still not able to use data retrieval tool. We owe money and they were not taken from our account yet. We were told by colleges not to worry, but update FAFSA using 2012 tax report and wait.

Efiled 2/14, used data retrieval 2/24.

I e-filed on 2-20, data retrieval tool still not available. Does the variation in time have anything to do with whether the return included an education tax credit?

Our return included the Education Tax Credit…

E-filed 2/9. Had to pay, paid online. Data retrieval 2/24.

E-filed 1/31. Data retrieval 2/5. Thought that was spectacular!

That’s possible. Mine was delayed in efiling until 2/14 because of the AOC, and it might have also delayed retrieval due to the AOC. I itemized deductions, but didn’t owe taxes to pay.

efile my return on 03/01 able to use DRT this morning. DD file her return on 02/16 paid her tax taken out from her checking acct. on 02/25 as of today DRT still not avail. I am guessing it might be her first time filling…
