Please rank these colleges

Please rank these colleges in their engineering major, possible mechanical/electrical engineering.

Cornell
UC-Berkeley
Carnegie Mellon
UMich
UIUC
Purdue
Tufts
Lehigh
Vanderbilt
Rice

I am going to attend UNSW in australia, then transfer after 1 year of college. What are the level of competitiveness on transfer of the colleges on the list. Feel free to rank them in order of transfer competitiveness.

Also, I am about to take my IB in less than 2 weeks, and I was wondering how many points I should aim for to have a chance to transfer to colleges on the list above.

Ranking them would be difficult. I would group them as follows:

ENGINEERING OVERALL:

1 University of California-Berkeley

2 Carnegie Mellon University, Cornell University, UIUC, University of Michigan-AA

6 Purdue University-West Lafayette, Rice University

8 Lehigh University, Vanderbilt University

10 Tufts University

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING:

1 University of California-Berkeley

2 Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, UIUC, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor

6 Purdue University, Rice University

8 Lehigh University, Vanderbilt University

10 Tufts University

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

1 University of California-Berkeley, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor

3 Cornell University, Purdue University, University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign

6 Carnegie Mellon University

7 Lehigh University, Rice University

9 Vanderbilt University

10 Tufts University

US News, for what it's worth, has the following:

Electrical:
2. UC Berkeley (4.9)
4. U Illinois UC (4.8)
6. U Mich (4.5)
7. Carnegie Mellon (4.4)
9. Cornell (4.3)
11. Purdue (4.1)
19. Rice (3.6)
51. Lehigh (2.8)
44. Vanderbilt (3.0)
77. Tufts (2.5)

Mechanical:
3. UC Berkeley (4.7)
5. U Illinois UC (4.5)
5. U Mich (4.5)
8. Cornell (4.3)
8. Purdue (4.3)
10. Carnegie Mellon (4.0)
28. Rice (3.4)
42. Lehigh (3.1)
47. Vanderbilt (3.0)
71. Tufts (2.6)

also, can you please rank them in terms of transfer competitiveness. ie. rice is most probably harder to transfer into than purdue.

Transfer statistics are availlable online. Just go to each university's website and check the stats. I can tell you that Cal and Michigan have deceiving stats because most of the transfers they accept are from in-state community colleges. I'd say most of those schools, with the exception of Purdue, probably have transfer acceptance rates of 20%-40% for out-of-staters.

In this case would Cal be more competitive in terms of transfer admission than Cornell and Carnegie Mellon?

I believe I will have a better chance at Michigan since they said in the rejection letter of freshman admission that they will give me preference in the case that i might want to transfer there.

Also, can the common application be used for transfer admission too?

Some quick stats on transfer applicants:

Cal: 10,000 applied, 2,500 were admitted (25% were accepted, mostly in-staters))
Carnegie Mellon: 300 applied, 50 were admitted (15% were accepted)
Cornell University: 2,400 applied, 800 were admitted (30% were accepted)
Lehigh: 250 applied, 100 were admitted (40% were accepted)
Michigan: 2,800 applied, 1,200 were admitted (40% were accepted, mostly in-staters)
Purdue: 2,500 applied,1,500 were admitted (60% were accepted)
Rice: 400 applied, 100 were admitted (25% were accepted)
Tufts: 550 applied, 100 were admitted (18% were accepted)
UIUC: 3,000 applied, 1,500 were admitted (50% were accepted)
Vanderbilt: 400 applied, 100 were admitted (25% were accepted)

Your chances are good with Purdue and UIUC. Like I said, Michigan and Cal are deceptive.

Wow thx alot Alexandre. This is a very big help.....

Should I retake my SAT 1 & 2 to give me a better chance for transfer?

If you think you can improve significantly on the SAT, do them again.

Ahh ok... Any ideas what kind of IB score I might need to transfer into those unis, so I will know what to aim for.

Straight 7s. A total of at least 40.

Whoa :O
I am predicted 37...... and I think i will get 37.. lol

Is 37 IB points with about 2000 SAT 1, and 3 x 800 SAT 2 enough to transfer to these universities?

Purdue and Illinos, yes. The rest would be hard to tell. They would still be worth a try, but I would not trust to hope.

Just out of curiosity, do you think I am as likely to get into UMich as UIUC, since they said they will give me preference in the case that i want to transfer.

Also, Purdue and UIUC yes - does this mean they should be my safeties?

Like I said, Michigan gives preference to Michigan community college students. I'd say the acceptance rate for out of state transfer applicants is under 30%.

Where do you get the transfer statistics. If my son wants to transfer to a top notch, elte enginneering school, will it be easier from Colgate, Villanova, Penn State or GWU.

I found them on the USNWR university profiles. IF your son wants to transfer into an elite Engineering program, I recommend he go to the best undergraduate institutions and excell at pre-Engineering courses (Calculus 3, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science etc...) his first semester and apply to transfer immediately.
