Please Rank These Schools In Terms of Prestige in India

Hi, I am an NRI potentially looking to come back to India after doing a masters in the us, so I was wondering if you guys can help me rank the following schools from most to least prestigious in India. Thanks:

-university of Virginia
-university of Texas - Austin
-university of Michigan
-university of North Carolina - Chapel Hill
-university of Washington
-Vanderbilt University
-Washington university in St. Louis
-Notre Dame
-University of Southern California

If you can't rank all of them, can you at least tell me which 3 or so schools will carry the most weight over there?

Thanks a lot and I can really use your help with this!

I think the ranking would depend on the field of study.

They are all good schools and I bet they all have good reputation.

Here is an arbitrary ranking from Sci/Eng perspective:

UMich

USC

UVa, UT, UW, UNC - roll a dice. I would pick UW for CS or Comp Eng.

Depends from employer to employer.

You know the general consensus among the unaware people in india is that purdue is as good as princeton. Hahahaa.

Depends on where you want to work too. East/West Coast.

East/west coast in India?!
Regarding the ranking, I agree with Tippu. U Mich & USC are well known here.
@OP - Good decision, Welcome home  But be prepared to compromise.

Oh right. I didn’t read the coming back to India part. I meant East/West coast in the US.
Here’s my prestige ranking (my opinion):

U Michigan
U Texas-Austin
UVa/U SoCal
Notre Dame
UNC
Vandy
UWash
WU St. Louis

Prestige is not necessarily equal to the strength of the individual programs.

All the schools should be pretty recognizable in India, hopefully. But I don’t think there is a prominent ranking of US schools in the minds of Indians. So, unless it is Harvard or MIT, I don’t think any school on the list going to hurt your chances at the job. Btw why go back to India? But Umich is the best research, business, law school on the list, but for med school WUSTL should be the best I guess.

Hi guys, thanks for the help so far. I was looking more into the business/accounting field in case that changes things a bit. Because I’m looking into a masters in accounting where honestly, most programs are virtually the same, I’d rather go to a school that will wow people in India and don’t really care about anything else. I’ll learn the same stuff everywhere, plus I saved money by going to a safety rather than prestigious school, so money isn’t going to be a barrier either. Thus, I’d rather just go to a school where all the aunties and uncles will say, “wah, kitna badiya US institute se padai kiya hain” in India, particularly given my less than stellar UG :). I feel that going to a name brand school, which I’m guessing will be a math/science/eng school, even if their business rep in the US might be considered subpar will also be beneficial for me when marketing my own CA firm/CA services and help me later on.

Secondly, can we add UIUC to the list? I’d imagine that would carry some weight because they have amazing engineering programs in the states.

^ why are you not considering Northwestern then?

UIUC is tops for accounting!

NU doesn’t have a masters in accounting as far as I know…

My list for business/accounting:

UMich (Ross school of business)
UVa
USC/UT Austin
UNC/Notre Dame
Vandy
UWash
WU St. Louis
