please read!

ok, for those of you who've read this thread on a few other links, I'm sorry, bear with me. I want to know my chances of getting into UM as either a bio, environmental science, or English major.I can retake the SAT, but was thinking of applying early (Sept.) and then just checking off that I will retake it, because I've heard that they rarely outright deny you, only defer until the new scores are in.

-would be first from my school to apply to UM

yeah, i feel that if you applied early and retook your SAT you'll at the very least get deferred. your GPA is very solid obviously, but needless to say your SAT isn't quite as impressive.
You said that you're the first to apply from your school. Does that mean your school is weak? If it is weak, that could hurt you. However, if it is economically disadvantaged, that could help you.

my school is mediocre, but that is because it is economically disadvantaged, if that makes any sense. most smart kids just go to UC, which is the main reason I'd be the first to apply. so should i apply before i re-take the SAT, and then just make a note that i will be retaking it? That way if they didn't want to outright accept me bc of my scores, they would know I'm retaking it. if i apply before retaking it, i would be with the "first batch" of applicants (Sept), but if i waited to get my new scores i couldn't apply until nov., which they don't recommend. i will take the ACT in Sept, but then wouldn't apply until oct., and i really have no idea how i'll do on it. sorry, i know it's a lot of info, but any help would be appreciated. thanks!

Aside from applying to specifically the College of Engineering or LSA or the B-School, UM, nor any college for that matter, will judge your application based on your major. Just because you have certain test scores, which may be low for people who typically chose that major, the school really doesn't care what you're planning on majoring in. Your SAT score is low though for any school at UM, you should work on improving that to complete your otherwise promising application.

With a GPA that high and being number 4 in his class, I don't see how he could NOT get in. I mean his SATs might not be the best but they aren't terrible, Umich is hard to get into but it's not harvard!

Match/Reach. I suggest improving the SAT and sending in the app later.

I say you have a fair chance of getting in. With your ranking and GPA, it is obvious to admissions that you are intelligent within the context of your environment. Additionally, your EC's are very competitive against other UM applicants (I really like your athletic accomplishments). That said, it would significantly benefit you to increase your SAT scores. Once you score within the 2000-2100 range, UM will be your safety. To provide you some comparative insight, here are some common facts:

Average high school GPA 3.75

SAT verbal scores over 600 70%, SAT math scores over 600 86%, ACT scores over 24 94%, SAT verbal scores over 700 21%, SAT math scores over 700 43%, ACT scores over 30 38%

Regardless, even without the SAT, you are a match for this university. Despite being OOS, this university is quite easy to get in when compared to other public schools like Berkeley. With the consistently high acceptance rate, you have more than a fair chance. People on CC tend to be overly critical with chance thread. However, a general scan of the actual student body will show that candidates like yourself are above average.

Good luck!

(...and yes, contrary to what others say, majors do play a part on what the admissions think of you. Source: personal experience. :))

All public schools are going to be more concerned with the GPA than the SAT scores...therefore, I think you stand a good chance at being accepted. Your EC's are outstanding btw, so that isn't an issue.

Definitely take the ACT. Different tests work for different people...and you might do better on it. Get a prep book and review for the test...the ACT website actually offers practice tests online. Those will give you a good idea of how you'll do. If you do well on the practice tests, then you'll want to consider sending your score directly to Michigan and applying early.

Thanks so much for all the advice guys. I actually called the admis. office to ask them when I should apply (before or after re-taking the SAT), and they said definitely apply as early as possible, and if worse comes to worse they would simply defer me until my new scores are in. I too have heard that they put more emphasis on GPA, so hopefully that's true. One last question though: should I wait until I get my ACT scores back to apply (probably beginning-mid Oct), or apply at the end of Sept. when they first open it up? I honestly have no idea how I'll do on the test. Oh yeah, I'd probably apply as a bio/environmental sciences major, if that sways anyone's opinion. Thanks again!

vc08, Michigan relies much more on GPA than on standardized scores. Your SAT is lower than the Michigan mean, but your GPA and APs, make up for that. Michigan is a match/slight reach for you.
