He's in 8th grade, looking into bs for 9th.
He's bright, but not hades material. His middle school average is probably around a 90-92. He scores well on state mandated testing and such, but he tends to not really apply himself (English is a weakness). He's very, very into sports. He's played baseball for as long as I can remember and he's very good at it. He's played on a travel team that has 100+ kids try out every year since 10U.
He also runs cross country, which he absolutely loves, though baseball is first to him. He ran xc this year on varsity and got his varsity letter. He has 5:55 split times.
I feel that bs would be very beneficial for him. I need recommendations though! He would definitely need money (athletic scholarships?). Can you think of any schools that would be a fit for him (good fa/scholarships, good athletics, good academics but realistic for him)?
Thank you.:)

Ps. Sorry for mistakes/awkward wording, I'm on my phone! :)

It would be helpful for him to take the SSATs sooner than later. If he cannot do this, then take a practice test. Some people with good test taking skills are surprised by the results because he will competing with other test takers, rather than the usual nationally normed results.

Because he needs financial aid, it would be good to include schools that would consider him to be among the top 25% or higher of applicants and/or a top athletic recruit.

If you are in the mid-atlantic, then it would be good to look at the MAPL league [Mid-Atlantic Prep League - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Mid-Atlantic Prep League - Wikipedia). Very good athletics and academics. Of these schools, Lawrenceville is the most competitive so it might not be the fit you seek. The Hun School does not have a large boarding population, so investigate the boarding life there.

You really have to be outstanding, as someone who would make an IMMEDIATE impact on the school’s varsity team, to get any sort of ‘athletic’ money. And, typically it’s for the sports that the school cannot train an athlete in. As in, a sport or a specific position that the kid already shows a lot of training and achievement. This would primarily be hockey, lacrosse, ski racing, and skill positions such as a baseball pitcher or football QB.

As someone else said, I would definitely check out the Governer’s Academy. While I’m not too athletic (which is why I dropped this school for me), from what I could tell, there was a huge push on athletics at GA, as well as a solid academic curriculum. I’m sorry I couldn’t help you more - good luck!

Not sure why you are thinking he is not HADES material if he has a 92 average - I am know there are students admitted to some HADES schools with averages lower than that. Basically he is an A- student which is pretty good in my mind. It’s the whole package, and from what you have written I think you are underestimating him - apply to a couple of the top 10 schools - try Taft and Hotchkiss - both seem heavy into sports.

Maybe the OP say that he is not “Hades material” because she doesn’t think that her brother would thrive in that environment, or maybe a 90-92 average is very easy to get at his school (I have no idea). There are plenty of reasons why someone would not want the academic intensity of Hotchkiss, DA, PEA, PA or SPS.

She states that he “tends to not really apply himself” and that English is a weakness. To me, this sounds someone who is in touch and knows where he would be successful.

So, my advice to the OP is to look for schools that have a variety of levels of classes. (Reg, honors, AP) ALL BSs will require him to apply himself, and do a great deal of reading. But, if he loves sports, perhaps that could be his carrot. The sports opportunities are generally really great. I’d approach it from that angle.

If you don’t think that he would succeed at HADES Brooks and Governor’s would be good. (I know they’ve already been said) Another suggestion would be Mercersburg Academy in PA. I think there sports are okay and they have regular and honors classes.
