My son, a us citizen, wants to attend a computer science undergraduate program. His records were pretty mediocre~ overall gpa 3.2~3.3 (ranked 40~50%). SAT I math 740 critical reading 470 writing 530.
Can anyone please recommend a "suitable" school to apply to?

I don’t really know anything about computer science but I do know some “B” student schools that offer the major. Some of them may offer merit aid. Most of these are more rural and range from small to medium in size. I’m sure others can give you more options if you prefer East or West coast schools.

Maybe he should try SAT one or two more times (because of score choice). Hopefully he’ll get the reading part to a respectable level (I assume English is his first language, yes?). That said, any state schools should have a decent CS program. And it rarely mentions on CC but nothing wrong with the directional state schools (Southeastern Oklahoma, Southern Georgia etc. - not to suggest these schools, just examples of what directional means) especially with a major like CS. If he had 600 CR, I’d say Case Western Reserve, WPI, Rochester Institute of Technology, RPI… could be a candidate. (Cross posted with proudwm – same idea).

You might look at Indiana University - Bloomington. They have a good CS program, and you son’s stats fall within the advertised range (though at the lower end for GPA). You might also have him try the ACT, just to see if that showcases his abilities in a more favorable light. IU has rolling admission, so you will get some feedback fairly quickly.

Whether he would thrive in the CS department at IU is a different question. Your son will need to do some research to determine that.

Why San Jose State University? It is local to a large number of employers of Computer Science graduates, which means that they are much more likely to visit its career center than the career center of a similar reputation university that they have to travel to get to.
