Please review my letter of appeal

My stats:
3.9 UC GPA
1880 SAT
620 SAT II Lit
660 SAT II USH

I’ve decided it’s not gonna kill me to appeal. Is it helpful to include letters of recommendation? I’d really rather not… I want to make it seem like I’m talking to the appeals committee myself… not with a bunch of teachers standing behind me, if that makes any sense.

Anyway, here is my letter. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Chris you sound like a wonderful, and talented young man. I think your letter sounds good, and shows new information. Perhaps you could offer some letters of recommendation to be available upon request.
I have some suggestions for you.

Appeals Committee:

Hello, and thank you for taking time to review this letter of request. I’d like to begin by explaining why I am appealing my rejection. Upon visiting UC Davis in November 2005, I developed a passionate interest in furthering my education there. Although I have received dozens of offers, each with different incentives, UCD remains at the top of my list. I realize you receive applications from many qualified individuals; I hope you will reconsider mine. Here are some things that have changed since my application was submitted:

• I have been awarded a 4-year type VII Air Force ROTC scholarship
• I have been employed at a local supermarket and continue to work there
• I have put in more community service hours at local establishments.
• I won the county championship at the Riverside County Academic Decathlon.

My grades for the first semester of my senior year are as follows:
-AP European History: A
-AP English Lit/Comp: A
-AP Calculus AB: B
-Academic Decathlon: A
-Air Force JROTC: A

With the exception of Academic Decathlon, I continue the above courses in my second semester. I feel I am qualified to attend UC Davis, and also believe I would add to the diversity of the campus. I respectfully ask you to reconsider the decision that was originally made, and would be grateful if the appeals committee would overturn my rejection. Thank you again for your time.

Thanks for that collegemom! Anyone else? Please please please?

From what I heard, you can't appeal with senior grades... So I don't know if you should include it.. or if it'll make a difference..

From UC Davis' website...

If you choose to appeal, your letter should describe information not included in your original application. This may be compelling information regarding personal circumstances and its impact on your academic performance, or possible errors in your application. You should include your fall 2005 and/or winter 2006 courses and grades, and your current spring 2006 courses.

Anymore suggestions? I'm desperate!

Is this specifically for Davis or do you intend on sending this to somewhere else? If so, the guidelines varie within each school. For instance, UCSD does not want high school senior year grades or additional activities. Other than that it sounds great, good luck to you.

what, with those grades and test scores, u shouldn't have got rejected in the first place!!!
no doubt u gonna get ur appeal...:)

Yeah only Davis, and thanks again! Haha yeah kobe... I was shocked myself at the rejection. I still have nothing but bitter feelings towards Davis... even if they overturn the decision I'll have a tough time choosing it over Irvine, which did accept me...even though in a strange way I still really really really want to go to Davis...I don't suppose I'm making any sense.

I know what you mean. I went to a community college for two years and planned to transfer in the winter quarter, it just so happened that that was the year they stopped accepting winter quarter transfers. I was a bit mad at them and ended up at Sac State for the spring semester. Thankfully I was able to attend Davis in the Fall.

The letter has been sent via USPS Express... now all I can do is wait... I'm actually beginning to hope they don't overturn the decision. If they do... I'll be a wreck having to decide what to do.

Chrisr88
Whatever happens just remember you WILL go to college, and you have earned it. Good luck to you! :)

do you have any other choices? what are some of the other schools you can choose from? i'm sure they're just as good.

i finally took a trip down to socal and looked at irvine (my only other choice right now =( ), and i figured it is a great school to be in. you really should consider other schools. HOWEVER, i feel the same way as you. i was really suprised at my rejection the first time around... I've already sent my appeal through usps express mail, and ucd has confirmed it. I really want to go to ucd and i hope for the best of luck for the both of us.

what did you think of UCI? like in terms of the campus and the surrounding?

uci was great. i liked the campus and the area very much. uci is trying to build a "college town" feel to it by having dorms with little levels, a great deal of apartment homes, and plazas around. although it is known as a commuter school, it seems like it holds pretty good potential for a school with a "college" feel. although i have my heart set on davis (still waiting for my appeal), i found out i wouldn't mind going to uci at all. it is a great campus and i figured it holds a lot of potential including the campuswide honors program.

Wow Jas0n, my choices are between UCI and UC Davis(hopefully) as well... Davis confirmed receipt of my letter on Thursday.

I got into University of Arizona Honors program, as well as University of Nebraska honors program, each w/ giant scholarships... but I still want to to go a UC.

Shoot me a pm so we can talk more about or decisions jas0n....

We can talk about it right here =]. I recently visited UCD's campus, and, I must tell you, it was AWESOME. Now I know what a college town feels like. I'm from Northern California, and the campus just felt so comfortable for me. Admit Day occurred recently, and the last day will be the 21st (check out my posts). You should check out the campus then, since there will be many other admitted students, and current students yelling "Go to Davis!" And after assessing the many admissions decisions iIve seen out there, I'm very sure you qualify as a student at UCD also. I arrogantly believe I do, too, but my stats are a little shy of yours in terms of ECs and SAT1s (I also applied to engineering =). If Davis lends you admissions, I say take it!!

Oh yea, where are you from Chrisr88?

I'm the opposite of you haha. I'm from southern california... easy access to UC Irvine but Davis is an 8 hour drive. I visited there in November and loved it.

I applied as an undeclared major...let's hope we make it!

As an undeclared major, I'm suprised you were rejected first time around. But hey, with my experience, I can safely say there is always a "lotto" in all admissions. You will get a new feel being at Davis also, since it's in the North. As you could tell, the weather/vegetation is different, haha.
