Vanderbilt is a FAFSA only school, worth a look.
Instead of a SUNY, what about a CUNY?
i would not recommend attending a SUNY as an OOS student, especially when you have in state the Honors College at Penn State University park. If he gets into Cornell Engineering, go there. You can always take out low interest parent PLUS loans.Cornell is one of the very best in the country. If he wants an LAC for engineering, check out Bucknell, Swarthmore, and Lafayette. I think they have engineering.
The son may not want PSU since it’s very much not urban, but if he does apply, I agree that he should definitely apply to Schreyer as well.
However, it would also have to be kept in mind that admission is competitive.
I don’t think he has the EC/service/leadership record that would be required for acceptance to Schreyer. It’s just not realistic to bank on admittance to Schreyer. That’s why Pitt is on my list - admission to honors there is by stats only.
My DD went to Binghamton…I say take him there. He may not have as strong feelings as you might think. What does he like to do?
If he is interested in CMU make sure you visit especially being from Penn. You could do Pitt and CMU in the same day and if he really likes CMU I would suggest the overnight program.
They love kids who show interest and took a bunch off the wait list this year, even into CS.
SUNY EFS!!! Environmental and Forestry Science is small, excellent, and on the Syracuse campus. I wish my kid had the SATs for it
Be careful with ESF. It is a very specialized school. I work with people associated with ESF in the environmental field. Everyone loves it there.
That said, if you want environmental oriented academics, you cant go wrong for the SUNY price.
Just seeing this and wondered where you decided to visit. Our DS19 sounds very similar to yours in terms of stats, EC, and personality. He is interested in gaming, CS, and AI. Also not a fan of coats! lol
We will be touring NC State, uDel, Lehigh, RPI and RIT. He is also aiming more north than south. We were trying to see Stony Brook but couldn’t fit it in without adding several hours of driving. I’m so curious to see if he feels there is a good fit because he has seen and rejected his previous favorites.
I had to drag DD18 into the process but she finally got on board. Keep on him sand hopefully he will start getting more excited about the search!
Stony Brook does have a reputation as a suitcase school, but I know several kids there this year who could come home every weekend (we are about an hour away) and don’t because they are busy on campus. When my H attended The Brook, with the dinosaurs, he came home every weekend to work but many of his friends stayed. I think the school is attracting more OOS students and they don’t tend to go home every weekend. It is an excellent school for engineering, CS, etc. and even OOS, the tuition is lower than other schools and they offer merit money. None of my kids would consider it because of the reasonable likelihood that H would show up unannounced. Instead, they chose upstate SUNY’s that are 6 - 8 hour drives, minimum. I refused to fill out the CSS, so that limited the schools my kids could apply to.
S applied this cycle and had to submit CSS Profile so I don’t know about that…
^I’m sorry, that was probably me. I should have said they did not require the non-custodial CSS profile, at least they didn’t for my D to enter class 2015.
