Please suggest colleges in VA/NC for a great average student

Hi,

We're making a trip to VA and NC later this month to look at colleges for our daughter. She'll likely start as a liberal arts major. She's a solid A/B student who will do best at a medium/small school with small class sizes.

So far we have UNC Wilmington, UNC Asheville, Emory and Henry, Lynchburg, and College of William and Mary.

Any other suggestions? Any thoughts on the list we have so far? All suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

Warren Wilson College is a great one. It's very small however, so if you're looking to be on the medium end of that medium/small spectrum...also heavily left-leaning. Academically very strong though.

Davidson College may be a reach for your daughter but if you want liberal arts in the South, it's tough to best.

Have you looked at Elon University?? It is a very "hot" school right now and has about 5,000 students. Both of my neighbor's twins will be there in the fall studying liberal arts. Elon is close to Burlington and Greensboro ans has a beautiful campus. Admissions are becoming more competitive every year, but an A/B student should give it a look. Good Luck!!

If you are looking at Lynchburg College you should also checkout the former RMWC now Randolph as it just went coed.

A bit north...Hood College in Maryland.

Womens Colleges: Hollins, Sweet Briar

Others...Guilford College
Belmont Abbey College
Queens University

I second Elon. Everyone there seems to love it. It's reputation is increasing. It's small, small classes, and a good fit for an A/B student. It's somewhat traditionally Southern (preppy, etc.), but not in a closed-minded way.

Also: -Guilford College could be ok, but it gets mixed reviews on student happiness. (I live 5 minutes away so I'm pretty familiar.)
-UNC-Asheville is state school with liberal arts feel. Probably a good value.
-UNC-Wilmington is becoming more popular with NC students.
-Warren Wilson is good for extremely liberal hippies.
-Furman (In SC)
-College of Charleston(also SC)
-Meredith (all women's)
-University of Richmond, maybe as a reach

W&M isnt a school for an average student.

I have a friend going to UNC-A. He's a really kool and quirky 'hippie' type. I imagine the kids at UNC-A are pretty neat. I would for sure look at that as a top choice.

University of Mary Washington, and Roanoke College

To add a safety that is rarely mentioned, but I have heard good things from some local VA students via my son (my son goes to college in VA)-Bridgewater College.

"great average student." Oxymoron anyone...

Hahah. Yes. But I think she's clarifying that by "average student" she doesn't mean a C student, but rather an average student for CC.

I have two friends at Hollins who absolutely love it. Apparently the alumni network is amazing, and the humanities and arts are strong.

If you visit Furman, nearby Wofford would also be worth checking out. If you're coming from the NE, it might be a good idea to visit Goucher in Baltimore.

im glad someone mentioned furman haha davidson is very good school...CofCharleston, even wake forest- not many kids but pretty hard to get into...

For top students - Davidson
For average students - Elon - a very hot school now
For safety - Appalachian State (not a great rep but kids from around here love it - up in the mountains of western NC - valedictorian from D's school went there last year)

wake forest,duke...

if shes interested in psychology, mary washington is great

Washington and Lee
Davidson
Christendom College
Belmont Abbey

mary washington and roanoke are great schools...roanoke will offer you a lot of money for students probably around your statistics and i would say that mary washington is one of the best bargains you can get.

Mary washington is pretty much the best public liberal arts school out there and great for psychology and roanoke is a very underrated school in virginia because it is overlooked by powerhouse schools like Washington and lee and william and mary

PS roanoke has great reps in sending its premed students to UVA and its partnered with VT for engineering majors.

What do you think of this list - this is the narrowed down list so far, in no particular order:

Guilford College, NC
Lynchburg College, VA
Elon University, NC
Roanoke College, VA
High Point University, NC
Emory & Henry, VA
University of NC - Asheville, NC
Barten College, NC
Catawba College, NC
Bridgewater College, VA

Any you would take off or put at the bottom of the list? Why?
Any you think we absolutely need to add? Why?

Thanks for your help and suggestions

Appalachian would be a tougher school to gain acceptance than UNC-Asheville. UNC-A, while a nice school, is largely a commuter campus, I believe. Appalachian would have much more to offer, also part of the UNC system. Students seem to love Appalachian, and it has a lot of strong departments. From the little you've said about her grades, etc., Wake Forest would certainly be an easier admit for her than Davidson or Duke. I would also put Elon in as a safety. I also vote for Warren Wilson.
