S just got May SAT scores, and while I realize his scores are considerably lower than the typical student on CC, I'm hoping someone can suggest some west coast schools he might have a reasonable chance of getting into:
CR 550
M 490
W 560
...with probably a 3.0 GPA (no honors or AP, but decent ECs)
Any suggestions (hope) besides comm college?
If he takes SAT again, my guess is scores won't improve. He is not bothering with ACT.
Thanks for any suggestions!

Mesa State College - western state (Colorado) but not west coast

oh! You’ve already seen that one.

Thanks Shrinkrap, have followed that great thread but am not sure whether S’s SAT scores would be a fit for many of those schools. Any thoughts on fitness for the CSUs?

Northern Arizona (NAU) or UC Merced.

"Any thoughts on fitness for the CSUs? "

I’m sure he’s "fit "for most of them, and the application is pretty simple. He can start inputting some into now

“If you have a CaliforniaColleges.edu account, then all the relevant information you have already entered will transfer into the CSU online application. All you have to do is log on to CSUMentor with your CaliforniaColleges.edu username and password. It’s that simple. You can update or change any information with ease…”

and make sure he gets it in before the deadline,

@mommaburris-- S took only 2 lab science classes so not sure UC Merced would be forgiving?? I hadn’t thought he had a shot at a UC with his stats but maybe Merced is worth a try.

What does he want to study?
Does he want big school, or small? urban vs. suburban vs. rural?
What can you afford to pay?

There are >150 colleges & universities just in CA:
[List of colleges and universities in California](<a href=“List of colleges and universities in California - Wikipedia”>List of colleges and universities in California - Wikipedia)

^thanks Shrinkrap for the info. Will look into that right away.
@mih he isn’t sure but thinks he wants to go somewhere in S Ca. Maybe for business?
We are full pay.
Are any CSUs better than others for business/marketing?
Also will business be a struggle, since math isn’t his thing?
Thanks.

University of Idaho.

Intimate feel and reasonable size (~10,000 students) with the advantages of a flagship university (major research institution, big-time D-1 FBS sports, wide variety of majors), and a beautiful campus. All this in a wonderful college town that’s a great place to live - relatively low crime, lots of culture/arts/activities, access to outdoors pursuits nearby.

Yes, you have to deal with snow in the winter, but it’s not that bad.

In California, probably UC Riverside and Merced (see [University of California: StatFinder](http://statfinder.ucop.edu) ), and many of the CSUs.

San Diego State has a good undergrad Business program. His stats might be a little low though. He might have look into some of the less popular CSUs.

I would have him take the act. My daughter just got her sat results back.(first time taking it) and it wasn’t so good. She has taken the act and her composite score is well above average. They are different tests and some do better on the act. She is also taking sat again to see if she can improve. Don’t give up!!!

“In California, probably UC Riverside and Merced”

My son was waitlisted (but ultimately got in) at Riverside, with a 3.1 UC GPA, 1890 SAT, and decent essays and EC’s.

He got not even a nod from Santa Cruz, when statfinder predicted decent odds at UCR and UCSC, prior to 2011.

Have you checked out University of Redlands yet?

Azusa Pacific University?

Boise State. Lots of school spirit. Really nice town. Guaranteed graduation in four years. Cost, even for out-of-staters, is relatively low. Good business programs. They say a GPA of 3.0 and a 22 on the ACT would make an applicatnt an “excellent” candidate for admission.

He might like NAU - Flagstaff, AZ is a nice place and close to Cali.

what about the University of San Francisco? I also would push him to take ACT, after he spends some time preparing for it.

These may not be good for business, but my D1 (with similar gpa) is looking at these schools in CA:

-UC Merced -definitely an up and coming school in CA. Nice new facilities is a bonus. He could go for a year and then transfer to another UC (gpa guidelines on UCSC and Riverside are online under transfer page).

-Humbolt State-the “granola school” in the bunch. It’s perfect for my daughter, but stronger in the sciences, and not so much in her areas of academic interest. But for us, the price is good OOS. Not in CA, but Evergreen in WA state has the same stats avgs. and is a similar student body. 30K OOS cost.

-Whittier College -we just visited and it’s a really pretty campus. Nice college town feel. Didn’t know it at the time, but the movie Back to the Future was filmed there. It’s within the LA basin, but the college backs right up to the San Gabriel Mountains and it’s really beautiful once you get there. Friendly students and a very laid back feel.
