It's my strongest section! My friend told me when she talked to admissions officers at UChicago, they told her because the writing section is so new, schools just ignore it.

How true is this? Is it true for all colleges or just some?

Writing counts, don't worry about it not mattering.

yeah i want to know too....i received a brochure from NYU last year and I think i remember it saying that they don't really consider the writing section....though i'm pretty sure other schools have different policies

they do. trust me ..they do take a look at it, but in reality place a huge emphasis on english and math.

usc does woo-hoo.

and the rice undergrad admissions office says that if you do really well on the writing it will help, and if really bad, it will not look good.

rice used to require the sat 2 in writing b4 the new sat so it makes sense.

i feel your agony though. i mean, colleges all look at the english section of the act but not the mc section of the writing section of the sat?

they test the same thing, doesn't make sense.

It's considered equally by all top universities, so no, its not meaningless.

It is not considered equally by all universities though. Many still look at only the CR+M scores. Its not worthless, but you will have to check with the schools that you are applying to to get a better idea.

Most, if not all, of the top 25 look at it equally.

I don't believe Georgetown looks at the Writing section.

We were told by NYU at an admissions session last spring that this year is the first year NYU will indeed consider the writing score.

I know that specifically the ESSAY portion matters VERY little at UChicago because they figure that the essays are there to gauge writing ability... The writing score includes MC and the essay, of course.

I'm applying to all very competitive schools. My CR+M was 1550 and I only got 1 wrong on the W MC but did pretty bad on the essay and ended up getting a 660 on the writing section as a whole. How much do you think that will hurt me?

Not that much. Although they may consider the SAT Writing section, I truly don't think that they carry as much weight. Most schools don't even publish their mid 50% writing scores. Also, a kid in my school had a 1600/1600 but got a 680 on the writing section, yet he still got into MIT early action and he wasn't #1 or #2 in the class either.

it could never hurt you to have a strong writing, even if they say it doesn't matter. it will more than likely help you. that will only make your application better, i think they just say that for kids who do poorly on it

the sat writing is not totally meaningless

totally meaningless, it is keeping great kids out of their desired schools. Not everybody can test well in these tests. Glad I don't have ot take them anymore!

I heard, from my college visits, that it is not as important as Math or CR. Some of the schools I visited don't care about it at all, meaning they take only the Math and CR. Some don't care that much but want you to get some minimum score.

In a way, I can see why colleges might not look at it in a big way. Math problems in a time crunch is one thing, but a well developed essay in a time crunch... that's a little much. And all that idiom stuff isn't even taught in schools (or colleges).

And, I've checked my colleges... most of them don't really care about SAT Writing =/
With the exception of Rice, which someone mentioned =]

it still p i sses me off though that riceand other schools still doesn't count it equally as the math and cr. i mean, come on, they care about the reading section of the act as much as the math, science, reading sections of act, so why don't they count the writing section of the sat as much as the math and cr of the sat 1? I mean, are these college administrators stupid? The reading section o the act and the writing section of the sat test the EXACT SAME MATERIAL.

Oh well, at leat I'm not applying to MIT or or U Chicago, where the writing section counts for completely zilch. that would make me feel horrible to have my 800 writing score count for absolutely nothing.

yeah that's cool
