This is David's mother here on his screen name. As his parents, we are looking forward to Plebe Parent's Weekend as well as Induction Day. Could any parents that have been through Plebe Parent's Weekend offer advice as to when to arrive as well as the agenda for parents for the weekend. We are brining grandparents along as well and are interested in how the Academy "structures" the entire weekend. Will we be able to go out of town with our son, etc?

If there are any websites for parents of plebes that would be of interest, please let me know!

if you type in www.usnaparents.com - you'll be directed to the USNaval Academy Alumni Association site. There is a Parent link and just posted this week on that link is the Plebe Parent Survival Guide. It's 21 pages and chock full of information. There's LOTS on this website for famlilies and mids - so enjoy!

Cathy,
Would you mind telling me your location in Michigan.
When did your son hear about his appointment?
Here on the West side of Michigan, haven't heard of anyone getting an appointment as of yet.

Just a thought: in planning your PPW visit, plan on arriving at least one day prior so you can attend Friday morning's PEP, which starts pre-dawn on Rip Miller Field- an event not to be missed!

As for the rest- other than planning what days you will be in the area, leave the rest of the time "loosely scheduled".... while some mids will be open to lots of adventures with the family, others may just want to sleep, eat and watch TV in their "civies" and out-of-sight in their hotel room! Key to a successful visit: "SEMPER GUMBY"! :)

Things that the Incoming Class of 2011 Parents should do:

Go to the link that Peskemom provide and then go to the section for Parents.

Find your local Parents Club. If they have not yet contacted you, go ahead and contact them. The parents clubs are a great source of information, mentoring and support.

Join the Listserve, It will ask for the company number which you do not have yet, I beleive that you can put a comment in the notes section to that effect. There have already been postings from class of 2011 parents they are including the new Class of Parents. This listserv also has thir own web site at:
http://www.usna-parents.org/ You can join on that page or through the Alumni association Page, it is the same listserv. That web site also has additional information.

Visit http://usna.org/
This is another of the parents sites that also has a listserv. The front page has not yet been changed inviting the Class of 2011 to join. However, if you go to the page "How to subscribe" (3rd menu item on the left) That page already has the drop down for class of 2011 in the registration form. This site also has a lot of Plebe parent information if you go to the Plebe corner.

Right now much of the postings on the list servs are concerning Plebe recognition Week, Commissioning Week, Taxes and Summer Training. Come May and June the Calss of 2011 will be in the spotlight!

Another good source if you feel up to surfing awhile, visit other states Parents Club Web Pages, you will be amazed how much good information is out there. The Alumni Association does oversee the Parents Club program.

I'm sure the other USNA Parents can add to this with their experiences!

I second everything Profmom & navy 2010 posted!
Our suggestion - put your efforts toward preparing yourself/ves for I-day. You'll have all summer to gear up for PPW. That will give you something to think about besides how big & empty your house seems and how quickly they grow up! (Yeah, I still miss him!).

You'll spend a lot of time pouring over pictures online trying to spot your "Waldo" out of a sea of uniforms & shaved heads. When you start to go cross-eyed, you can take a breather & plan for PPW. (Of course you'll want to make reservations ASAP tho').

Seriously, we are big "planners" and I do like to prepare for every detail, but USNA has everything organized so well, there isn't really very much for us parents to do but show up & follow the schedule! (USNA doesn't just cut the apronstrings, they rip them out by the roots! haha!). "Mom & Dad" didn't quite have as much control over things as we once did!

We pretty much followed the lead of our plebe during PPW - he just wanted to chill & hang out with us & our family in the area. "Structure" & "Activities" were not high on his priority list!

Sorry if that doesn't really answer your question very well - but not to worry - everything will pretty much fall into place! Just get those hugs in before I-day!

We are from the west side of Michigan. We received our letter from the superintendent today stating our Medical waiver (vision) was approved. It states this waiver gives us medical clearance for admission. We have had a GOA since October. I spoke with our admissions officer this afternoon and he said the formal offer of appointment letter will be in the mail by the first of next week.

Congrats to your family, it must feel great!!!
I noticed your post says from Northern Michigan, who did you get your nomination from? I have family in Petoskey, and that is what Northern Michigan area refers to me. I am lower west michigan area.
