Does anyone have any advice on how to prepare for the plebe summer and year? In particular, do you have any suggestions of a good workout routine to help condition for the plebe summer? Furthermore, what subjects should I brush up on before the academic year? Thanks.

For the physical part, get The Naval Academy Workout book. It's all laid out in there--and then actually DO it!

All serious candidates should purchase a copy The Naval Academy Candidate Book by William L. Smallwood. The book contains six chapters on how to prepare for the academy. The book can be purchased from [Amazon.com.

Candidates should also consider purchasing *The Official United States Naval Academy Workout*](http://www.amazon.com/Naval-Academy-Candidate-Handbook-Survive/dp/0929311051/ref=sr_11_1/104-2743941-4706340?ie=UTF8) by Andrew Flach.

In addition to physical training (running is a huge help), get the academic side of things buttoned up.....chem, calc and literature..... come in solid and hit the deck running.

I asked a graduate what advice he would give to a plebe on I-day, and he said:
"Don't take it personally."
Sounds like great advice. I hope I can use it next year.

Physically:
My brother (enlisted) tells me that if I can do 100+ push ups and situps in 2 minutes everytime I try, then I should be fine. Although, at NASS, I had a lot of trouble with scissor kicks , 8-counts, and running. Personally, I'm going to try to do as many reps possible of each exercize before I-day (if I get an appointment). Make sure you practice exercizes PERFECTLY, so that the correct muscles are getting trained.

"what subjects should I brush up on before the academic year?"

You will take validation test during the first few days and weeks of Plebe summer.

Brush up on Chemistry, Calculus, Physics, English and any languages you have studied. It really pays to validate out of as much as you can as it helps give you flexibility in your schedule later on.

Validations can be obtained through the Academy's tests and results of some AP's.

For plebe summer 2006....

Physicals did include 100 pushups and 100 situps in less than two minutes. You will do that several times a day, but it shouldn't be hard if you have hit the gym before showing up. Cardio runs averaged 8-10 miles a day. The hard part is you never sit down, so you might be jogging/walking more...A good number of plebes were on the 4th floor of the dorm this summer. If you go up and down the stairs ten times a day (average), that is 80 flights of stairs a day. It sounds crazy, but I would run stairs religiously. I talked to three plebes this summer who said the hardest part of the summer was going up and down the stairs "all day long".

Mentally, the kids that struggle the most are the people not prepared for a good amount of screaming and attention to detail. High school football coaches yell more than the plebe summer officers, but not taking ANYTHING personally is key. Your plebe leaders will love you at the end of the summer, not during :)

Academically, read as much Chemistry and Calculus as possible. The first year cal class will have you writing calculus proofs. You'll be expected to already know how to do cal, so get ready to write proofs and prove them right/wrong.
