We have a candidate entering with the class of 2013. Assuming he is OK grade-wise and military performance-wise once Ac Year starts, what are the chances of him being granted a weekend furlough in October? The occasion is to attend his father's 30 year retirement from the military. Not sure how common (or uncommon) this is in the Corps these days.

I imagine he would need to submit a "Special request Chit" (or the Army equivalent) up the chain. Any idea who would be the final approver?

Any insight appreciated.

I am not sure if this will qualify for “special leave” or not. maybe.
In any case - plebes are allowed ONE pass per semester. They may occassionally earn more (mine got an extra for being in the honor company in beast). It is very doable.
He will be responsible for his own transportation - will probably not be free to leave until late friday afternoon. Sunday accountability formation will be either 1800 or 1900 (can’t remember).
The final approver will be his TAC officer during the academic year.

Just thought of something- if a pass is needed and it is a home football weekend that could be problematic. Needs to be a “B” weekend for a pass. (very complicated!)

Please don’t hesitate to discuss this. If I were you I would have your son call his regional commander in the admissions office. he can give him the low down.

Mom of 4 -

Great point. The WE we were looking at was 17 Oct. It’s an away game (Temple), but it’s in Philadelphia, so I imagine that a good number of the COC will be there. Not sure if this one is “mandatory attendance” being an away game.

It is up to his TAC team and cadet chain of command ultimately.

Unless things change from last year (and that is always a possibility), I highly doubt that the Temple game in Philadelphia would be required attendance. More than likely, the only required football game that is not a home game will be Army-Navy in December. I do think the TAC are very understanding about granting pass for special miltary occasions and would try to accomodate your candidate’s request if at all possible.

The Temple game is not mandatory. The only mandatory “away” game next year will be Army/Navy in Philadelphia.

Assuming it is not a B-weekend (if it is, then you can just take a normal pass), you will have to send up a Special Pass and the company TAC officer will be the final approving authority. As long as the plebe is in good standing in all three pillars, I think you would be hard-pressed to find a TAC that would not approve a Special Pass for a military retirement.

My sincere thanks to all for your insight. This is looking a little far into the future. Main focus at this point is preparing for and completing Beast.
