Plebe year

cool video

i believe i saw this on the west point documentary.
the IOTC

"My yuk daughter says don't sweat it. She says that after her year, Beast is now a "piece of cake"--"don't worry about being in shape, eat what you want, exercise if you want, and bring all your stuff to R day---there is plenty of room in the barracks, so tv's, radios, ipods, cell phones, your favorite stuffed animal are all welcome! And the cadre are sooo nice now!!"

It's a TRAP!

YES!!!! SHORTNESS!! 5'1, 105 currently off season! Having a short torso and smallish waist STINKS with the ruck. I had top bunk at FTX and there weren't any ladders so I made like circus camp to get up. Does USMA have ladders? I don't remember seeing any.

I saw that documentary not too long ago... memory of FTX and those mandatory school spirit bonding events come to mind.

YES on the Small = cute thing! I hate that! Plus I'm asian so I'll look like this till I'm 40!!! Even then, I'll still be short!

How has Beast changed over the last few years?

"How has Beast changed over the last few years?"

Vietnam>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>IRAQ

(same with CFT.)

lol vietnam -> iraq

but when we march in formation arent short people usually in the front to set the pace? and if i'm not mistaken, the guidon should be the person who is the shortest in the formation.

so in turn its not the short people who have to keep up its the people with long legs.

I don't ever remember being at the front in formation. I was the second shortest person in my battalion and never was I guide on or in the front.

I never had too much of a problem, until they put on the ruck and the LBEs...

beast is getting easier. buckner is getting harder.

Since it's questions about plebe year, what are the policies on sleep and music? And if you're out on a fun run will upperclassmen still harrass you?

Another question concerning plebe year: I heard that dinner is optional except on Thursdays. Does this hold true for plebes during both the academic year and plebe summer or only during the academic year?

Thurs mandatory dinners are during the academic year. During Beast you will eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner when you are told.

We had a brief from the commandant during first semester, and he mentioned the possibility of more mandatory dinners. If they do institute them, they won't be very popular.

Short people are in the front for runs and ruck marches. Other than that, they're in the back, because you fall in tallest to shortest. And there is no "pace" to set if you're marching in formation, it's a 30" step, 120 steps a minute...180 a minute if you're doubletiming (running). Which means, technically, you can't actually double time in formation at more than about five miles an hour, about a 12 minute mile.

Policies on sleep - Everyone goes to bed at midnight during the academic year. Yes, they do check. You have to go to breakfast formation, so you'll be up around 0630. You may not sleep during AMI (Morning inspection) so you can't nap until 1030. Other than that, you're good.

Music - For most companies, plebes get music back during ESP (evening study period, 1930 until 2330), and you'll get your movie privledges back too.

If you're out and about outside the cadet area, most upperclassmen won't bother you at all. I always brought plebes back down from the PX/Commissary in my car because I felt bad for them while they were waiting for the bus. Of course, if you're out of uniform or something else is really wrong with you, they're probably going to correct you, but you'll be able to fall out no problem.

Also, weekend meals are optional. Breakfast on Saturdays is normally mandatory because you have formation and stuff to do. But the rest of it is up to you. Brunch on Sundays is a fun time to get together with friends and go have a leisurely meal. If you wanna get really fancy, get a bunch of friends together and have Sunday Brunch at the Thayer, it's half price for cadets in unifom! They put on a great spread.

Other good places to eat in Highland falls -
Sushi King. Completely wonderful, and I love sushi.
The diner on Main Street, it's either Michael's or Charlie's... - Great pancakes, all day long
Paradise Cafe - Coffee
The ice cream parlor - Two of the owner's kids went to the Academy, they love cadets
The Chinese buffet at Dong Fong - Americanized Chinese, still good. Crab ragoon and Chinese donuts are my particular favorites.
Highland Falls Market - Good deli in the back, they deliver LATE too. So midnight cravings can still be soothed. Their breakfast sandwiches ROCK. Bacon, egg, and cheese on a toasted bagel, heaven in a little foil wrapper. http://highlandfallsmarket.com/
Grant Hall actually does good breakfast sandwiches too. One of their specials and a vanilla coffee can save any morning. Their peanutbutter cookies are pretty good too.

Park's Resteraunt isn't a bad place either. A bunch of buddy's of mine went their when all the yuks were having Yearling Winter Weekend.

The short cadets bring up the rear during parades. When the numbers "don't work out", they end up on the bench, so to speak. My daughter is 5'1" and didn't get to march on at the Army-Navy game during her plebe year. (gotta keep those lines perfectly even you know)

As for restaurants in Highland Falls, bzzzt provided a nice list. There's also a great little (and I mean very little) hot dog stand across the street from the Visitors' Center. It has a huge menu with lots more than just hot dogs. And yummy sweet potato fries. I can't remember the name, but you likely can't miss it. And when the weather's nice, they put tables outside.

Highland Falls -> Paris?

Nah!

I was told that you can have only one picture frame on your desk- I was wondering if you could have one of those digital picture frames that slide-show like 300 pics?

No, just an 8x10 (if I recall correctly) photo frame. You can do a collage within that frame though, or have multiple pictures behind the front one and rotate them from time to time.

I'd only bring one to Beast, but the knick knack rule went out a few years ago...unless the new Chain of Command reinstates it, you can have more than one. I took several collages of pictures to USMA with me in my photo frame, and changed them as necessary.

I was wondering if its possible to use a sleeping bag to sleep in on top of your bed at West Point? I know at Annapolis they do it so they don't mess up their beds. I was wondering if the same held true at West Point.

"I was wondering if its possible to use a sleeping bag to sleep in on top of your bed at West Point?"

Sleeping bags in the barracks are cool---also don't forget your flat screen tv, stereo system, and drum set. :)

Seriously, I doubt you'd be able to get away with it----especially not as a Plebe.
