PLME Chances

I’m a senior this year.
4.04 weighted GPA, 8/405 in my class
Scores of 5 on AP Biology, European History, English Language, Psychology; 4 on US History, and an unfortunate 2 in Calc AB

My courses this year:
AP Government
AP Statistics
AP English Lit.
Honors Physics
Physiology/Pathophysiology II
Medical Microbiology/Hereditary Medicine
Scientific Research and Writing
Keyboarding (I know that’s slack…I need it to graduate)

Junior Year courses:
AP Calc AB
AP US History
AP Psychology
AP English Language & Comp.
AP Biology
Physiology/Pathophysiology I
Dual Enrollment Emergency Medical Tech.

I have 200 or so hours volunteer work teaching horseback riding to elementary school aged children (including 100 with mentally handicapped kids) and now do so for pay. I’m a camp counselor during the summer.

I’m varsity captain of my school’s Scholastic Bowl team (also called quiz bowl, college bowl, etc in other places) and will be joining the debate team this year.

I’m on the city’s Mayor’s Youth Council and attended by invitation a meeting with the Governor on the state of high school education. Last summer I attended the Governor’s Foreign Language Academy for German Immersion.

I do have 2 rather serious holes in my record - a C in Calculus my junior year, and a few Bs (and one C) in credit courses I took in middle school (algrebra-C, Earth science and geometry-B)

SAT:
CR: 800
math: 680
writing: 710
essay: 10

taking 3 SATIIs and the ACT in October…

Also, I would try out for their NCAA Equestrian Team, if that makes a difference

I’m in an Academy type program within a public school for students interested in health sciences, so I take courses like Pathophysiology and Microbiology in addition to regular high school classes. I’m also a VA state certified EMT.

I’m interested in cognitive neuroscience for undergrad, then the PhD-MD program, possibly getting a PhD in neuroscience or cellular pharmacology. My ultimate goal is to be a neurologist specializing in children with developmental disabilities in a university research hospital researching autism and working with patients.

Your SAT scores are kinda low...the PLME average is about 2250, so try retaking it again

Other than that, your course load is very impressive, and you have a nice GPA. Also, your interest in nueroscience will look very nice if you put that in your essay for the PLME application

Your calculus grade and AP score, as well as your SAT math score, will probably kill it for you... I don't mean to be a downer, but PLME is incredibly competitive, and most PLME applicants are very good at math.

You're still a strong applicant, so don't let me prevent you from applying. Just don't get your hopes up too much!

I'm planning on applying early decision and I'm taking 3 SAT IIs on the only October test date. If I retake the SAT I on the November 4th test date (3 days AFTER the deadline for ED) and send that score in, they can still consider it with my application, right?

and what about with holding my AP calc score? Do they see that it was with held and assume I did poorly?

they dont consider sat score i thought

Brown does consider standardized tests (SAT / ACT etc) but it does not weight them as strongly as some peer institutions.

Are you sure medical school is right for you? Math doesn't seem to be your strong point, so I doubt physics will be either. Have you taken any chemistry courses?

You have some weaknesses, especially in math, but I still think you have a reasonable chance. I wish everybody weren't so strung up on high test scores and a million ECs, because these kind of schools can be so unpredictable...write an amazing essay.

I have no trouble with either chemistry or physics, just the misfortune to have a succession of terribly overcrowded math classes taught by disinterested teachers. Granted, I DO have trouble in math, but my crappy public school does little to help that.
As for the question of whether med school is right for me, I'd have to say YES. I can't really see myself doing anything else. After 4 years in a health-science directed high school curriculum, I feel well prepared for the challenges ahead.
Thanks for the input everyone :)

Just checking. As long as you know that's your right path, I say go for it, and good luck!

Thanks! I really hope I can get in...I've spent a lot of time convincing my parents that this is my best option, so if I don't get in not only will I be devastated, but my mom will do that happy/I-told-you-so/now you can go to state school dance. I don't think I can handle that!

ok uh yeah you might want to not get too attached if you think you'll be devastated by rejection. remember guys, come back to earth. this is college. i get worried when people "fall in love" and say "college X is the one!" and treat applying like trying to seduce the hot dude/dudette of your dreams and get married.

i'm remembering a quote from field of dreams, something like this...

"you love the red sox, but did they ever love you back?"

basically, don't get attached. that simple. there are 4000+ fish in the sea of college admissions, and you'll be happy at other places too, more than just 2 or 3. did you ever think about looking into libarts schools, like williams?

EXPLORE OPTIONS.

honestly, it's THE best thing you can do for yourself.

While your point is valid there is nothing wrong with striving to get into the best college isthere? I'm sure shes not just applying to PLME without exploring other options.

not sure if you can hold back any AP scores; I do know you can't hold any SAT scores back, if they send one they will send them all. some colleges will take your highest composite, others highest single sitting. with the ACT you can pick and choose what sittings you want to send, but not the SAT.

Best bet on the timing of any tests prior to EA/ED is to call the college's admissions office..we've found a great deal of variability on that question

you sound like you'd make an excellent doctor, great Ec's that tie in with your passion and I admire you for choosing that area and having a focus like that at such a young age...best of luck to you, that field needs compassionate people like you!
