Would anyone take PLME or HPME over Harvard?

If your heart is set on medicine, of course you should take PLME/HPME over Harvard. IIRC from HPME you only have to maintain a 3.2, and undergraduate lasts for three years as opposed to four, or even five. You’re guaranteed admission, something that is already incredibly difficult for the best medschool applicants.

there is someone choosing hpme over harvard this year (bluejacket111?)

PLME, Rice/Baylor, U of Pittsburgh Med School Guarantee Program, HPME… these are all highly selective and perfect for someone whose heart is very early set on going into medicine and like both the undergraduate and med schools of the programs. I believe there is a new rule that just came up recently for PLME though, which is that you cannot apply to other med schools while still holding a guaranteed spot at Brown Med?

As someone who got into Rice/Baylor and the Pitt BS/MD programs, I can say that it is tempting to go to these combined programs. I was leaning towards Rice/Baylor (back when Baylor had money, a hospital and was ranked 10), but then asked myself if I believed I could get into a Baylor-comparable medical school. I answered yes; so I went to Harvard and wouldn’t give up my last (almost) 4 years for anything. I will be headed to Michigan for medical school in the fall, but the resources, extraordinary people, and activities I’ve pursued at Harvard have made it worthwhile even if I didn’t get into a med school.

My S gave up PLME and UCSD med scholar for H. He recinded the interview of Rice/Baylor (got $22500 trustee+$4000 Century scholarship). He plans to come back to UC for med school because the cost is much lower for CA residences.

HPME is extremely selective. If you’re passionate about medicine, then go to HPME.

D is turning down PLME for Harvard. Any Harvard students/grads have regrets over turning down med school combo programs?
