Plme Plme Plme Plme Plme

First of all, if you visited the Brown University campus, how was it? Boring, lame, exciting, big…? Secondly, concerning PLME, the Brown Medical School is ranked 13th in Primary care and 38th in research. That is kind of low. Why does everyone seem to be under the impression that Brown Medical School is really good, is my second question? Thirdly, does anyone have any official stats on effective the PLME program is in guaranteeing grad students residency in major hospitals. For example, I want to be a surgeon, does the PLME limit my residency options? Finally, if Brown is ranked pretty low as a med school, why is the PLME so competitive? Thanks

Ranking isn't everything. Brown's med school is ranked a little lower because the PLME students don't take the MCAT. On Brown's website they show residency placements for their med school students, so you can look there.
PLME is competitive because, like most combined degree programs, a guaranteed seat in medical school is well sought after. There's also the fact that, well, it's BROWN.

the research ranking is mostly weighted towards the size of a medical school's research enterprise, which has very little to do with medical students or medical education.

in brown's case, the ranking largely reflects the way research dollars are book kept between lifespan (the company that owns the teaching hospitals) and brown. this website shows that by combining the research portfolio of lifespan and brown as most medical schools do (and as brown plans to do in the near future), brown medical school will easily be in the top twenty.

another consideration is that brown is a very new medical school (~30 years old), and therefore has just had less time to build up the research side. that being said, brown recently created three new medical research buildings at a $200 million combined pricetag.

lastly, the bottom line for any medical school the bottom line is how well students do in the residency match. for as long as the medical school has existed, students have consistently matched into the best residency programs in the country--surgery included
