hi guys, i am currently a sophomore at a CC in cali, and i am trying to transfer to UCSB as a pharmacology major. (looking into other schools for pharmacy also)
my 1st year of college, it was really hard for me because i had a lot of family issues, and ended up with a 2.7 gpa, i know its horrible. For some reason i did bad on the GED classes but got like B's on the major classes like Calc 1 and Calc 2
I know for a fact that my 2nd year of college would be a lot better, and i WILL have a higher GPA then wat i got the 1st year.
i know i should talk to a counselor for all my questions and i will within a week but for now, help me out, please

my questions are:
1. would i still be able to transfer to a UC or a school that has a pharmacy program with a GPA lower then a 3.0 if i explain what happened and with better grades in my major req classes than my GED's and better grades in my 2nd year of college?
2. what other colleges out there are good at pharmacy that i mite be able to get in?

any other information would be very much appreciated
thanx so much guys

You’re going to have a very difficult time getting into that major. First, you’ll have to find a UC school that even does a comprehensive review and takes your explanation into account. Some of UCs don’t even look at that portion of your application. UCLA and UCB do comprehensive reviews, and I think UCI might as well. I’m not sure about the others.

If you got a 2.7 GPA last year, and you’re expecting to do “a lot” better this year, how would you end up with a total GPA below 3.0?

If I were you and completely set on pharmacy school at a UC, I’d think about spending another year in CC, working my butt off and getting that GPA up above a 3.5. Pharmacy is a tough major, and in all honesty I don’t think you’ll get in with a sub-3.0.

I can’t answer that second question.

When you say GED do you mean “general education” or your actual “GED”?? If they were classes to help you with obtaining your GED then you have no worries because they will not be transferable so they will not calculate into your GPA. Since you only have +/-30 units so far, if you do really well this next year you can bring your GPA up above a 3.0 pretty easily.

As for pharmacy, I’m not too aware of “good” pharmacy schools in CA but I do know that “ANY” UC or CSU for that matter, will have a pre-pharm curriculum. You’re not going to “major” in pharmacy for your undergrad. You just need to fulfill your prereq’s and major in what ever it is you’re interested in. It could be in psychology if you want, as long as you do the requirements for entrance into pharmacy school.

Hoped that helped!!

Grimes: i know ill do better then last year, but i guess im just scared
UCSCMelissa: wen i say GED i mean the IGETC thing, some of the classes like a english class, econ, etc (classes that have nothing to do with my major), would u know where i could find the requirements for entrance into pharmacy schools for some UC’s?

Well yeah, but if you do better than last year I can’t imagine you won’t jump up above a 3.0.

if i volunteer at a pharmacy at kaiser, would that help me? been thinking about doing that so i at least know what its like to be a pharmacist

also what other things do colleges look at besides GPA?

^that would be a really good idea!

Skyline, check out the SDN forums, they have quite a number of knowledgeable people there about pharmacy school. Some of the advice I’ve seen to supplement a low GPA is to work a few years as a pharmacy technician.

where would the SDN forums be at? would u have a link to em
thanx so much man
