<p>I don't think it is considered wrong any more to say data is, but the phrase really should be data are.</p>
<p>many of these nouns fall into the category of "non countable" nouns. They always take singular verb. 1,2 are classic non countable nouns. "Data", however, is technically the plural of "datum". But as far as American English goes, "data" could also be singular. "food" is also non countable when referring to quantity. If you are referring to types, however, food can take the plural, "foods".</p>
