Probably a stupid question. My D accepted and attending Fordham starting Fall 2011. Would like to attend the Middlebury language progarm this summer. The cost is $7000+ for the course and I would like to take out a PLUS loan for this (No other loans anticipated for the Fordham tuition). Is this even possible since this is just a summer program and she shall be matriculated at Fordham. The PLUS appears to require you to be a full or 1/2 time student at the college which the loan is for. In this case it is a 3-4 credit course at most. Do I go through Middlebury or Fordham.

You can check with the schools, but I don’t think you can do the Plus loan through either school because she’s not matriculated at Middlebury and the classes aren’t offered by Fordham, where she’s actually enrolled in a degree granting program. We’ve run into this several times, though not specifically with Plus loans, and have always just had to pay out of pocket or through 529 withdrawals.

Do you really want to spend this money for a summer course at Middlebury? Is there some reason for this? Even if for some reason your DD is behind credits at Fordham, has she investigated other summer programs that will be much less. I think a lot of these summer programs are trading on the schools name, but I wonder how much it means.

Well we heard there was a great language immersion program there. We aren’t set on that if you know of a better way to really get to know a language. She will be an incoming feshman and took two yrs of french in ha w/ a+ but the instruction was quite weak. Please suggest any program

I dont know, but I dont understand what her goal is. Is she going to be a French major/minor? Continue at Fordham?

Federal loans require a student to be enrolled at least 1/2 time (generally seems to be 6 hours) and to be a degree seeking student at that institution.

Deleting post - didn’t realize she’s not currently in college.

Thanks, I think that answers my question. No, not a French major, just trying to make sure she can keep up and start at something beyond <year 1. Fordham I believe makes you test in for placement and continue through to profiency or third yr.

I think you are right about Fordham, but I would trust them that the placement test is accurate, and if they only give her credit for one semenster, it is what it is. I just think you are spending a lot of money, and not certain what you are getting.
