Cowman…I see that you’re now considering transferring to Columbia. Columbia does require your dad’s financial info. So, your “need” will not be the same as it is now.

You’ve indicated that your dad has money. Will your dad commit to paying for Columbia (or even NYU)? If not, then Columbia won’t work for you…you’d end up in the same spot as you have at NYU.

How much will your dad spend each year on your education?

Cowman, you made a good decision. Enjoy your decision and keep your GPA up and worry about law school when the time comes. A lot lies ahead of you. Some posters on CC will always remind you of how your dreams and decisons are wrong and squash them immediately. You do not have to answer any of the questons posed. Good luck.

I don’t think anyone is trying to quash Cowman’s dreams. On the contrary. The people here are trying to make sure he is able to have dreams…and not nightmares.

Many 18 year olds make decisions based on incomplete information. Cowman admitted that "I just didn’t have all my information straight to make the right decision. "

So…the people here were telling him that he had some gross misconceptions, which he did and could have led to a huge mistake. Thank goodness he now understands.

Another great idea for the name of this forum!

And forgiveness, of course, usually only helps you out after you finish college and start working. It doesn’t help you get loans now, and if you exceed the available federal loans then you have to hope that you get a private loan. And those are hard to even get these days; banks aren’t exactly interested in risking defaults, even if the debts are not dischargeable in bankruptcy.

Take a look at the thread that Pierre0913 started “Great Article about Student Debt!” You don’t want to one of those featured in such articles holding a bag of $80K in student debt. There are kids in that situation.
