plus/minus grading sytem help!

i'm an incoming freshman~after contacted with several people in my uni,i get to know the grading system in my school.yeah,it's the so-called plus/minus grading sytem. It means minuses are taken into accounts.to illustrate it more clearly, here is an example. At most schools, a student could get grades of A- in every class and still have a 4.0. At my uni, the minuses are calculated into the GPA and the student would receive a GPA of 3.7.

is that horrible?will it make disadvantages in transfer?i really really need help now.all posts are appreciated a lot!!

thanx again for your time!

I am in that system and it sucks, but I know alot of us here are under the same grading policies so thats life basically.

I think +/- grading is the norm for most colleges/universities. As far as i know, Brown is the only university doesn't go by that system.

It won't put u at a disadvantage.

thanks a lot to cherryblossom and ccg
your words make me feel better now^^should i explain it to transfer AO when i apply for transfer?

If the college you want to transfer you doesn't use +/-, your grades should be adjusted accordingly. At least that is what my -hopefully- future university is doing.

Good luck to you!

The place I go to does not use the +/- system. It went by the 4.0/3.0/2.0(A, B, C) scale. However, starting this fall, they're letting teaches use +/- grades at their discretion.

I don't think you need to worry about it. Many intro level classes that are known to be difficult(Chem I, Physics I, etc.) curve a lot at the end of the semester, sometimes without even assigning a +/- . If you try your hardest, you wont have to worry about your grades.

UT is switching from 4.0/3.0/2.0 (A,B,C) system to the +/- system beginning Fall 2009.

it seems like most places are on the +/- system...theres no need to explain that system in your application. and no, it definitely does not put you at a disadvantage.

D had no problem transferring from a school that uses +/-. Her gpa was quite different without using it. She didn't explain it (she figured the school she was interested in was intelligent enough to figure it out!). Don't obsess about having a 4.0. It really is not necessary ... it's nice, of course, but not mandatory.

thank you all!!your words are really helpful^____^
i have no obsession now~
i'll do my best to get a high gpa^.^

For Pre-Med Students, that's not good news. Then again, it's a more fair system than the cutoff A B C system for students with more potential. So whinning about that is no excuse.

My college used a 100 point scale, with anything below 70 an automatic fail. Try explaining that one to grad/med schools!! Actually, though, our grads had a lot of success in getting into top MBA programs & med schools. The selection committees do know their stuff.
