Plus

Anyone know anything about the PLUS program? I received an application for it and was wondering if any of you have any experience w/ the program.

The benefits look similar to the Honors program. Except, I feel that it seems condescending. It's for people that are a) first-gen college students b) low-income c) disabled; PLUS seems to be for people that have a disadvantage/"weakness" whereas Honors is more or less a recognition for those that excel.

any one applying for it?

Same question as orangepie. Hoping for more responses..

jah i got it and am totally applying for it. It seems like such an advantage for freshman(tutoring, counseling, friendship). It does seem to have the same benefits as honors kids. And I bet it wouldnt hurt for grad school. The hard part seems to be writing the essay DURING SUMMER gahh.

condescending. jah it feels like that first. Like theyre trying to help the "weaker" kids. But the program is meant to be benefical towards disadvantaged students, whether that be financial, parents education or disability. It sort of serves as a reward for the kids that "werent suppose to make it this far." And ima proud of where i can from and what ive sumwat accomplished:) so to heck with what others think. and maybe ima jus talkin out of my ass but its all good ahaha.

hmm im wondering if this has anything to do with the housing theme that we chose... ie Academic Advancement or something. Cuz I got that theme and I'm wondering if theres any connection. Eww we have to write an essay... just like Honors.

I didn't choose any housing theme..but I got it, so no connection :)

No, it has nothing to do with housing theme. It's either because you're a) first-gen college students b) low-income c) disabled.

Now, what is the benefit if you're already in Honors? You get priority enrollment as long as you're in it (unlike only the first year as advertised by PLUS), counseling, tutoring, scholarship opportunities, all that stuff already. As far as I know, none of those service are mandatory.

PLUS, on the other, mandates that you get tutored and go to workshops. "All PLUS students are required to take quaterly workshops..." "As a PLUS student, you will be required to get free tutoring..."

Anyone wanna explain the difference between the benefits of PLUS and Honors? I don't see a reason to do PLUS if one is already in Honors. But on the other hand, if you're not in Honors (either because you were not accepted or don't go to UCLA College (L&S)), then that may be a different story.
