I have around a 3.7 GPA, but without A-s it would be almost a 4.0. How do colleges compare considering many high schools don’t have A-s?
Some colleges consider the + and -'s and some do not. They will look at your HS profile report and determine your GPA from that information unless they specifically state that they do not use +/-.
It’s worse than an A and better than a B. It’s possible to take that into account even though not all high schools have pluses and minuses. Some colleges recalculate GPAs using their own methods, but others don’t. In general, it’s hard to find information about what is done at any particular college, but most will make an effort to evaluate your GPA in the context of your transcript and the difficulty of your high school.
A few comments:
–I’d recommend you not worry over something you can’t control or change.
– Many HS do have minuses (our HS has pluses and minuses) so you are hardly alone. As noted above each HS sends a school profile describing among other things its grading system so your GPA will be reviewed in the proper context
– I’d imagine that for most people things even out over the years of HS – that without the minus there might be times where you might have had the lower letter grade and other times you might have had the higher letter grade without the minus.
–A number of colleges do recalculate GPAs using their own criteria.
