I applied for 3 different “internships” over the summer and i don’t know which one to choose!!
In college I plan on double majoring in Journalism & Computer Science!!
- Communications Intern @ School District (i haven't heard anything back, but interview went well!)
Basically you go to school events, help take pictures, help update their website, create videos, webpage design, stuff like that
(PROS: get to keep writing, explore other media outlets) (CONS: Might not be as creative/fun since it's with the school district)
- Local TV/Broadcasting Station (just got excepted today, NEED A DECISION BY TOMORROW!)
More media based, so looking at community news, community sports, talk shows, that kinda thing
(PROS: More experience in journalism, close to home, different experience with media/journalism) (CONS: no coding, more media based)
- Girls Who Code
Summer Immersion program, 7 weeks, get to learn about code and it's impacts (like workshops almost)
(PROS: Good coding experience, in the City, new learning experience) (CONS: more tech based, not necessarily journalism)
ALL OF THESE GO ON AT THE SAME TIME & I CAN ONLY DO ONE!! I NEED HELP ASAP BC THE TV STATION NEEDS TO HEAR BACK BY TOMORROW!! PLZ HELPPPPPPP!!! (any information about girls who code would also be appreciated)
Okay so first off CONGRATS THESE ARE AWESOME OPPORTUNITIES.
I am a Girls Who Code Alumni from last summer and I LOVED EVERY SINGLE BIT OF IT.
My first advice to you would be to go with your heart and where it is leading you. Secondly, Girls Who Code is a stepping stone to several opportunities for yourself both journalism based and tech based even though more tech based. For example, I know that after I learned how to code during the GWC summer program that led me to start a club at my school to teach others how to code and developed my interests in education and empowerment. My point is what you will learn during those 7 weeks will prepare you and give you a headstart on whatever you wish to do.
Also a couple of questions:
Does your school have any comp sci classes that you can take? if yes then GWC may not be helpful and the TV station thingy might be more enlightening
Also are you a sophomore? If you are then you can always take the TV station program this summer and reapply for GWC next summer.
If you answered no to all of the above AND your heart is leading towards GWC then I’d say go for it.
Plus you get to meet the CEO of GWC who is awesome and amazing, make friends with empowering, funny, smart and compassionate young girls, visit cool tech companies, go to the capitol( I was int he DC session so I got to go to the capitol), get free t-shirts, and MAYBE even get a free laptop(our sponsors allowed us to keep our computers for free) and most importantly see if programming is for you.
Plus, you can always ask to write for the GWC blog to gain writing experience–I wrote an article about my summer at GWC for the official blog–and maybe even start your own publication experience online using the knowledge you gain from making websites at GWC?? so many possibilities with tech-- YOU REALLY CANNOT GO WRONG, JUST FOLLOW YOUR HEART
^ SORRY THAT WAS SUPPER LONG
