Is it wise to SKIP inorganic chem w/ AP Credit if you got a 5 (instead take biology freshman year) and move onto Organic Chem your sophomore year? Why or why not? Please respond! I need to know soon and any input would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

I don't go to Cornell, but you might want to carefully evaluate that choice. Organic chem is hard, so you have to be completely confident with basic chemistry. Believe me, the pre-meds in the course make the curve a lot tougher than it should be. Taking orgo after no chemistry for a year might be a bad idea.

i don't go to cornell either but I would agree with the previous posting. A high school course is not going to prepare you for a course at cornell. Organic chemistry is really hard too...

Organic chem requires very little inorganic chem.

That said, I don't know a single premed at Cornell who didn't take any kind of gen chem at all. Even if you have Chem AP credit, you should still take either Chem 207/208 (many of whom took Chem AP in HS) or Chem 215/216 (most of whom received 5's on the AP test).

If you are premed, you need to take chem.

Otherwise, I've heard from a lot of people that have taken orgo, and what they tell me alligns with what norcalguy says...inorganic and organic are separate courses that don't depend on eachother.

If you got a 5 in AP chem, intro chem would still be work intensive, but the material will come to you easier since you've already seen a lot of it before. I wouldn't absolutely count on it being a grade booster, but you'd probably do well.

Organic chemistry is difficult, but from the people I've talked to they either love it or they hate it. Becuase of it's difficulty you have the right idea waiting until sophomore year, even if you skip inorganic.

Well if you got a 5 on AP exam, you can only skip one semester of chem which is chem 207 or chem 215. And if you are a premed i don't think it is wise to skip the first semester of chem because in the first semester of chem you learn basic concepts such the structure and stability of molecules. And if you are not familar with these concepts you are not going to do well in organic chem which deals in depth with the concept of structure and stability of molecules.

what abt Engineering students? Is it advisablle for us to skip it if we get a 5?
