1 cousin who went to columbia

A cousin who went to Columbia probably won't help you unless he's famous. It's what you did for your extracurricular clubs that count more. A big list of clubs won't help you. You need to get high grades, do well on your AP exams, and a solid SAT score would help.

well, a 143 on the PSAT is really not very good at all. That would definitely be below average for anyone so definitely not good enough for Columbia if you do similarly on the SAT. The PSAT doesn't really matter because I don't think colleges like Columbia really care if your National Merit or not since they kind of already expect it, but if you do that badly on the SAT then it will matter. People usually improve from sophomore year to junior year, but usually only by a few points, so you really need to study to jump at least 50 points.
