Hi guys, this is J , a current junior at the greater NYC region.
I just want to know if I have any chance getting into any of the top 50 schools, perhaps even the top 30 ?
I took the SAT and got a 1480 and my gpa weighted is 103 out of 100. In term of activities I am currently the president and founder of the History Club at our high school, as well as the Red Cross Club’s treasurer. I was also member of the school fencing team when we got city champion. In term of awards I participated in a statewide Russian language competition and was medalist for 3 years. I also won a nationwide essay competition once and I am planning to participate in at least one summer school rn, preferable at NYU (I did College Now for 2 years).
Currently I am thinking of certain schools like Emory and Notre Dame, I am not quite about my major but I am thinking of anthropology or pre med? (I need suggestions too if you have good ones)

Heard this year’s result was bad for a lot of ppl so just asking about this, thx
Uhh just saw someone else posted these thing. So I have been the manager of Tech Crew (lighting) for 3 years straight and have like 200 volunteering hours. I am also intending to take 2 SAT 2s (US History and Math 2) and have taken 4 APs (all with 4 or above)
@KiyoSan What major do you intend on pursuing?
Anthropology or pre med I said it loll
You are a competitive applicant. Your stats are great and your ECs are good. Your first generation hook will probably help. Write great essays and you could get accepted to several top 50 schools
Uhh to be more specific, what are some of the schools in the “several” list ?
“I have something like 200 hours of community service”
You sound like a student who is only volunteering for the resume boost and your ECs are extremely random and inconsistent.
However, I believe you would be admitted at Emory.
@KiyoSan
Please retake the SAT, also do some EC’s that correspond with a possible major of interest. As of right now your an average applicant for both schools. You have a decent shot at Emory of you apply ED.
I think you’d be able to get into Emory, even RD. Not too familiar with Notre Dame, but you probably have decent chances there as well. NYU is a possibility too. If you’re interested in the Ivies or Ivy-tier schools, they will be high reaches for you, but I would still suggest applying to them if you so choose. Your SAT is pretty good, but definitely retake it, and maybe try the ACT as well. Your AP exam scores won’t matter too much, but make sure you study for the SAT Subject Tests, since they’re pretty difficult (from my own experience, rip). Essays are also super super important as well, so definitely write good ones when you apply.
What other schools are you interested in? If you like ND, maybe other Catholic schools like Gtown or BC. Not familiar with top anthro and pre-med schools, but you should probably look into that.
Thanks! I have looked into Gtown before and I like the atmosphere there, but it only has REA and that would be a problem. I wonder if Emory is rather easier to get into because many said that I have a good chance lol
@KiyoSan
It’s not, most of these respondents are in high school. Your SAT is below the median for this year for Emory. And your GPA seems to be a 3.7 UW , correct? Which again would be below the median. Emory however is more holistic so if you can get them to like you as a person through your essays and teacher reqs then you definitely have a great chance, but that’s very much easier said than done. And Emory was theoretically more difficult to get into than ND this year.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think a 103 is a 3.7 GPA. As long as your unweighted GPA is above a 3.8, you should be good. Definitely retake your SAT, but honestly it’s not that bad even for Emory. As someone who was admitted to Emory RD, you have a pretty good shot, when I consider my own profile. Just make sure you write good essays, but don’t be too worried about them. I literally wrote my two Emory supplements in two hours on the deadline, and was still accepted to both Emory and Oxford, so they’re not really that big of a deal.
@KiyoSan Both ND and Gtown’s Restrictive Early Action programs prevent you from applying ED anywhere, but allow you to still apply to other EA programs. So you wouldn’t be able to ED Emory, but you could apply to both Gtown and ND Early Action, as well as other EA schools you like, and apply to Emory and the other schools that only have ED in the RD round.
Definitely do not choose to apply to ED to a school just as a way to have higher chances at that school. Only apply ED to your number one choice. I had applied ED to a school that I thought I loved, but in reality I was undecided and needed more options. So I had to make a choice, keep the ED application and suffer through 4 years there if I got in, or ruin my chances at that school by withdrawing and allowing myself to schools at which I had lower chances. I took the second option, and I definitely do not regret it. So my point is that you must carefully weigh the helpful benefits of applying ED with the expectations that you are bound to that school if admitted.
I don’t think 103 is a 3.7 either, but I don’t have any chart or method of conversion. To be more specific, I am receiving mostly As and A+s in my school and taking only honor and AP classes.
