This was our last long drive podcast. A lot of “adult” language and themes as the name suggests, quite cringe inducing, but very funny.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but Your Own Backyard podcast about the Kristin Smart (CA college student who disappeared in the 90s) case is really good. The investigative podcast led to an arrest and now a trial.
“The Prince” podcast by the Economist is the #2 news podcast on Apple.
Very interesting perspectives
Agree that Your Own Backyard is a good listen. A story with a VERY long history is well editted. This could have been confusing and rambling, but is not.
Be sure to tell all your Arthur loving PBS grown up kids that Arthur is getting his own podcast.
It’s a gorgeous day in the Chicago area so I walked outside and listened to the latest Archetypes podcast (To ‘B’ or not to ‘B’?). It was a good episode because of the two guests, Mellody Hobson and Victoria Jackson.
Thanks to whoever recommended Milk Street. (LOL - I come from an area with many great breweries/brewpubs, including Lefthand. So I keep trying to call it Milk Stout).
I enjoyed this during my run yesterday
Ongoing podcasts I listen to:
The Daily (Delves into NY Times reporting of the moment)
Unorthodox (about American Jewish culture and lifestyles)
This American Life (self-explanatory)
Heavyweight (so interesting)
No Stupid Questions (not a fave but I like Stephen Dubner)
Limited-episode podcasts I liked:
The Shrink Next Door (OMG – what a story! And true!)
Dead End (about the NJ political scandal surrounding the death of the Sheridans and the power of the Norcross family)
Betrayal (about various betrayals)
Dirty John (woman marries a man who has conned her) and Your Own Backyard (Kristen Smart murder at SLO) are both really compelling true crime series. Both passed the “long drive” test.
The Clearing (a woman suspects her dad may have committed unsolved murders during her childhood) is also a good listen.
The third season of Serial is really well done. It’s not a true crime one like the first two, but it follows several judges, cases, etc in a single courthouse. Really informative and interesting look at the criminal just system without being sensational.
Nice list. I may have to go back to No Stupid Questions. I also like Stephen Dubner and often listen to Freakonomics Radio (hundreds of episodes, meandering topics)
I’ve also listened to Milk Street on NPR for years - it’s enjoyable - the hosts are just so into it and there is a nice low-key vibe. Even though I don’t cook much - it’s still a good listen! lol
I thought that Milk Street had ceased being a podcast a few years ago?? Or did Chris Kimball just leave it? I listened for years….
I have a couple of new podcasts I have been enjoying - so many podcasts, not enough time!
Dinner SOS - by Bon Appetit. BA staff help solve “dinner emergencies”. Love it.
She’s My Cherry Pie - a shoot off from Radio Cherry Bombe. Jessie Sheehan hosts and interviews BAKERS in-depth about their history and their most famous baking recipes going through the process step by step.
Home, Addressed. This is a new 8 part (still unfolding) podcast about interior design, decorating, making use of antiques/second hand/thrifted purchases.
My podcast life is OVERFLOWING!!!
I’m an Unorthodox listener, too. Did you listen to The Gate Crashers, “A podcast about the hidden history of Jews and the Ivy League, from ‘Unorthodox’ co-host Mark Oppenheimer?” It was fascinating!
Milk Street podcast with Chris Kimbell is alive and well.
Chris Kimbell left America’s Test Kitchen years ago–ATK has a podcast also.
Yes, lots of Milk Street episodes including new ones. I’ve selected a few different topics of interest, never disappointed. They are of varying length (usually 40 to 50 min, a few about 30 min).
Yes! Loved it! I really do like Mark Oppenheimer a lot.
If you like Malcolm Gladwell, Revisionist History is a good bet. If Michael Lewis, try Against the Rules.
My go-to is Stuff You Should Know.
The Land That has never Been is very interesting. History, social justice, etc…
Can you give a link to the Clearing? I found several with similar names but none of them sounded right. Thanks!
I am having trouble linking from Spotify, but hopefully this link will help you see if what you find is indeed this.
