Poetry question

Hey guys, I need major help!!!! I am begging anyone who is good at reading and poetry to please read this poem by Emily Dickinson and explain it to me. The link is <a href="http://poetry.poetryx.com/poems/3464/%5B/url%5D">http://poetry.poetryx.com/poems/3464/</a>. If anyone can explain this to me, you literelally saved my life!! PLEASE - thank you very much - DAN

my suggestion: get out your dictionary and look up Transport first... then look up many other words in it for double meanings and stuff... print out a copy if you dont have it so you can write on it... try to figure it out.

for example... a couple defs of transport that might not jump into your head at first glance:

To move to strong emotion; carry away; enrapture.

The condition of being transported by emotion; rapture.

Yeah, that is a great suggestion because a lot of the words make no sense to me because this is the first poem I had to ever analize. Do you know what this poem is talking about?

I have a basic idea... but it is a hard poem so I can understand your problems with it... Still, there is no way to learn how to comprehend poetry if someone else just gives you the meaning.

look for paradox in the poem and analyze the diction... I think that should give you some good insight. Also, Dickinson uses those dashes in a lot of her poems... look at how they are utilized in this poem- what words do they set off? what does it emphasize? etc

I think going through those steps should help you greatly if combined with the dictionary suggestion from above.

Also... really do print it out and write on it... you can't analyze a poem without being able to mark it up... or at least I can't do it well... marking it up makes things so much easier.

Drum, I have been in my room since 5 30 trying to understand this poem. I used the dictionary and tried your suggestions but I still dont even have a basic idea of what this poem is talking about. If you can just tell me the basic idea you dont know what you have done for me. I admit I am not a great student. My avg. in english really sucks it was a 70 last semester. This essay is the last essay of the year and will really make it or break it for me. So please can you tell the basic idea. Thank you so much!!! - DAN

Tackle it one question at a time... before you can figure out with the whole poem means figure out what the first line makes you think of... what it means to you. The reason I am hesitant to give you any concrete concepts on it is because poetry, especially poetry like dickinson that is focused on emotion and experience, takes a personal interpretation. There is no one right answer... as long as you can support whatever it makes you feel with examples from the poem then that is enough.

Does it make you feel depressed? if so what elements cause that? Does it make you think of your life or the past? if so point out phrases and word choice that ellicit this reader response.

Drum, can you tell me if this is right. That the people in the poem that suffer from blindness, homesickness and thirst have solutions right infront of them but it will never get solved. And also that you cant relate to these people unless you actaully experience what they have gone through??
