Pogue Scholarship

Anyone know when we're going to find out about interviews/finalist status?

Apps were due Jan.5th, so they still need some time obviously, but interviews are in February...which is soon! Yikes

they'll probably let us know in a week or so

oh wow, hope its soon, im getting really eager to hear about this lol. a lot of people probably applied so they probably need some time to read the apps over...:-/ anybody else really nervous?

lol im not very nervous--im not expecting to get it...since im OOS. and 15/350 is a very slim chance.

OMG! It seems like a lot is happening next week. Notification of the Pogue is probable, Morehead notifies folks of their status, and Honors letters go out too? How many Pogues are there and are they separated by in state and oos?

misstinax3,

hey im out of state too, OH, are there really only 15 for out of state? out of 350?? that seems rediculous, definitely way too many for instate and way to few for out!

Where has this information come from, I mean about In-state vs. OOS? Does anyone know how many IS and OOS scholarships will be awarded? I guess that since this is the first year they allow OOS applicants, and apparently it is less and less geared towards minority applicants, all this will skew past data.
To me, it seems that January will go out in a blast!

how do u know this? are u sure its not they pick 15 OOS to receive the actual scholarship, not just for an interview.

yeah i called the financial aid ppl and they said they split the pogue apps into 2 piles, OOS and IS. for OOS, they get about 350 and they select 15 for interviews. and most of the OOS applicants are insanely qualified, so i dont have much hope.

I'm IS, misstina, did they speak you at all about IS applicants. Thanks for any info you might have, and best of luck

just wondering, why did you call fin aid office? did you ask something specific about the pogue?

(just wondering what else they might have said)

oh wow, that kinda sucks :-/. are they looking for insanely smart people or like more well-rounded?

and wait.....if they only pick 15 for interviews..how many OOS people actually GET the scholarship?

powderpuff--ahh im sorry, i didnt ask about instate. but im assuming they're easier on the in-staters? good luck to you too!

getouttabuffalo--i called financial aid because i simply wondered about pogue applicant stats since i barely heard anythign about it. i wanted to know if i had a shot at it or not..lol..guess the answer is no. they also said that the pogue application is more of a supplement to an applicant's entire application to UNC. they look at an applicant's entire profile, using the pogue application/essay as additional material.

swim4china89--i have no idea how many OOS actually GET the pogue..sorry =( but they're looking for people who can contribute to the campus and will add diversity (not just racial diversity, obviously)

oh wow lol sounds near impossible to get...:( lol now i know not to get my hopes up too much haha

ahh...anyone hear anything yet from pogue about interviews? :-/ please post anything when you do hear ANYTHING!!

we are supposed to hear back from them in "late january." it's late january. anyone hear anything?

im gonna puke. im so nervous about hearing back. this week is so intense for me...pogue, mcnair for USC, and ingram finalists for vandy. i cant take it.

i'm in the same boat. my ability to attend an out of state institution depends on the ingram and pogue. eek! good luck

me too! woa ur doing ingram too? i just had my interview on friday. she seemed to really like me. but she also said it was super competitive this year. what do u do community service wise. o and where r u from? im from buffalo, ny (duh - username) lol

OK, this is a really dumb question, but if you carefully read the Pogue info site they say they give $7,500 to NC residents. Then they talk about OOS residents. BUT, if you read on they say "Pogue scholars receive the award for 8 semesters of undergraduate study". So, simple math, if there are 2 semesters per year, does that mean a NC student would get $7500 each semester? $15,000 in award $ per year for a NC student?
I copied and pasted their exact words below. I don't know what to make of it! What's the general word out there?

Below, I copied and pasted their words:

Pogue finalists will be invited to Chapel Hill for an
interview in mid-February; winners will be notified
shortly thereafter. One must be present at the interview
in order to be considered for the award.
In addition to faculty mentoring and other program-
matic incentives, the Pogue Scholarships currently
provide an award of $7,500 for NC residents. For non-
residents, the Pogue Scholarship covers the cost of
tuition, fees, room and board. Pogue Scholars receive
the award for eight semesters of undergraduate study,
provided that they maintain the necessary grade point
average and remain enrolled full-time.
Students may hold only one major scholarship from
the University. Major scholarships include the Carolina
Scholars Program, the Morehead Awards, the Robert-
son Scholars Program, the Johnston Awards Program,
and the Pogue Scholarships. Your application to the
Pogue Scholars Program does not eliminate you from
being considered for other University scholarships.
