Point me to the right place please?

Hi! My daughter is starting to research majors and schools. She is an actor and wants to end up in film, she prefers it to stage. She is competent in musical theater but it is not her passion. In considering what kind of school and major to look for, right now I am just trying to figure out which section of this forum I should be looking in! Is this the right place, or "Film Studies?" It seems as if Film is more toward production.

Thanks for some beginner's info!

I think you are in the closest to right place as you can be. Most kids interested in film I have seen looking at the programs at Pace in NY and Chapman in CA. I’m sure there are others, but those stick out in my mind as each having an acting for film emphasis.

DePaul has a very good film school which draws on the acting majors for casting. Also the Cali schools – Cal Arts, UCLA, USC.

Look into LMU in CA…

“Film Studies” often refers to the move academic study of film as an art form, rather than practical film making skills, or acting for film.

You should get lots of good information here about programs that are either focused upon, or offer opportunities in acting for film.

NYU also has an acting studio dedicated to film (Stonestreet) but I believe you can only study there after 2 years in another studio.

She wants to be an actor, correct, but act in films?

Backstage just ran a “Best Film Schools” list, which might be helpful. http://www.backstage.com/advice-for-actors/resources/10-schools-studying-filmmaker/

Dramamom, yes that’s correct. Thank you all for the ideas, they are all on the list but it’s good to have some confirmation. Sorry it took me so long to get back to this! I can’t believe a month has passed! Looks like I will be spending some more time in this section then. Thanks again!

Pace also has an acting for film BFA.
