I've been accepted to the Political Science Ph.D. program at SUNY, Albany and plan to go in the fall. I know it doesn't have the reputation of Harvard or the Univ. of Chicago, however it was my first choice for a number of reasons.

I'm wondering if anyone has any advice for starting out. Everything from what to bring (I'm moving from TN) to classroom & research tips (I have my B.S. w/honors in Political Science and some minor publications). So, mainly I'm wondering about the lifestyle, differences between undergrad and Ph.D., and any info you might have on the university or Albany. Thanks!

hi,2BaPHD,you've already got the offer? congratulations!
i also applied to that school but until now, still no news from that school.no rejection,no admission~~i dont know what's going on there.when did you get the offer? by mail or email? will they provide you with any sort of financial support? thanks.

I received an acceptance letter in the mail back in November for the Spring semester. But, I got a good job offer and deferred my admission so I could start with savings instead of debt. It's so nice to be paying off those student loans!

I'm being considered for aid in the fall, but they haven't made their decisions about that yet. They told me they do that during the spring semester. I really hope to get something, because they have a lot of TA's. They also said that aid almost always goes to their PHD students, rather than their MA students.

What degree/dept. did you apply to? I'm also curious if your decision to apply had anything to do with the schools good research reputation. And I wouldn't worry about not hearing back yet. They were the last school I heard back from. Their bureaucracy seems rather slow.

Hello,2BaPHD, i applied to PHD program in poli sci department for fall semester 2006. i applied for this school mainly b/c i am interested in the faculty's research interest and also for its location (NY). i don't care much about the rank thing, i am just looking for the right one for myself.

it seems that they grant little financial aid to international students but i still hope that i can get some. anyway, good luck to both of us!
